donghyuck could not stop thinking about the messages he received from jaemin last night. it was rather random to say the least. he hopes that the latter is not up to no good, or in other words, trying to play cupid. the male entered the school gates as per his usual arrival timing and took in his surroundings.
the school campus was quiet since it was still early–06:17am to be precise. donghyuck would always arrive early to avoid the hectic morning rush. and since it was pretty absurd (honestly) for students to be in school at this ungodly timing, donghyuck did not expect himself to run into someone in a bright yellow jacket.
"shit–you scared me!" the small voice shrieked and donghyuck's heart was racing–from the fright he had or the anticipation, he wasn't too sure either.
"hey it's you." he tries to sound as nonchalant as possible, hoping that the owner of the shriek remembers him from the previous time.
it took awhile for her to recollect herself from the mini heart attack before she recognised donghyuck. her eyes lit up immediately after realising it was someone she knows. "it's you! hey! oh my god i thought i was the only one in school."
haaaaaaaaa, i'm finally talking to hanbyul again after 2 weeks. donghyuck was over the moon but he needs to keep it in. the irony though, because the sun is starting to rise.
naturally they began walking again, except with the presence of each other this time. donghyuck decides to seize the chance to talk to hanbyul as much as he could before he regrets it.
"what are you doing in school so early?" the boy asked. the last time he checked, donghyuck was the only person who arrives in school the same time as the janitors.
"y'know... homework." hanbyul replies him sheepishly. "i have a perfect excuse though! my phone's been dead for god knows how long already, and everything was updated in the class group chat. long story short here i am talking to you." she sighed at the memory of her phone sinking down to the bottom of the pool.
"dead?" so she wasn't ignoring his messages on purpose? a small smile was threatening to find its way to his lips. the heavy feeling that was once in his chest wholly dissipated.
"yeah, it fell into the pool when i was serving detention. but it's all going to be over today, my friend apparently got it fixed for me!" she says excitedly, displaying all forms of it through her animated gestures. donghyuck laughed slightly before turning his gaze away.
they went up the stairs together, the sound of their footsteps echoed down the empty corridors. if they weren't walking together, donghyuck would've been crept out by the slightest sounds and make a run for it to the classroom like he usually do.
"anyway i realised i haven't asked for your name." hanbyul stated as they reached the last step of the stairs and with a weird tone, she added on teasingly, "i can't be calling you 'hey it's you!' or 'student councillor' forever right?"
oh right.
hanbyul still thinks he's a student councillor. if any one of donghyuck's friends hears this, they would be on the floor right now. if anything, the student councillors despises him - with the exception of a few of them, including the president. perhaps he should clear this up now.
"right, about that. i'm actually not a student councillor." donghyuck feels somehow embarrassed, a tint slowly dusting on his cheeks. "in fact, i'm probably one of the reasons why they're cranky most of the time." he added bashfully as his pace increased, walking ahead of her.
the short silence that fell upon them does not make his nerves any better. does he regret telling her that? what if she doesn't end up having a good impression of him? maybe he should've borrowed chani's student council badge and fake it till the end. 'fake it till you make it!' was what one of his friends, sunwoo would tell him.
"i knew it!" hanbyul exclaimed and donghyuck could feel his tensed muscles finally relaxing again. "you're way too chill to be one." she catches up with him and grinned widely.
hanbyul, oh hanbyul
donghyuck snorted. "thank you?"
"you're welcome! i should've known the moment you let me in..." hanbyul then went on and on about their first encounter as to why donghyuck would not fit to be a student councillor. to be honest, he was starting to feel butthurt. but at least, she indirectly called him cool. kinda. sorta. donghyuck was happy at least, to finally talk to hanbyul again.
however, things would always have to come to an end, sadly. they stopped outside her classroom and donghyuck was worried that his disappointment was evident on his face.
"thanks for sending me even though you didn't need to."
"who said i wanted to?" donghyuck teased. "your classroom was conveniently a few rooms away from mine."
hanbyul rolled her eyes and grunted. "geez, your true colours are showing. at least tell me your name if you want the privilege to clown me."
happiness glowed inside of donghyuck as the corners of his lips rose. it was hard to bite back his smile. his gaze fell on the floor, it suddenly seems more interesting than hanbyul's eager eyes gleaming at him. "it's donghyuck."
"okay... i'm hanbyul." she awkwardly states and realised how dumb the conversation is heading.
"i know."
"wait, you know my name this whole time?!"
donghyuck shrugged, a smug look on his face. "don't you have homework to do?"
"yeah but-"
"see you around hanbyul." he quickly turned his heels to the other direction before the girl could ask him anymore questions.
a quiet contentment spread through donghyuck. being able to talk to her again was all he could ask for, but formally becoming friends with her? it elevated his mood. donghyuck could finally be able to approach her easily without hiding, he felt dizzy with excitement. however, he isn't sure if he could tell her that he's in fact the person secretly behind 'haechan' and that left an uncomfortable feeling, churning in his stomach.
