Chapter One
It was winter and I was fixing my feathers. The cold air was seeping through the vent in the coop. Skids walked in, cold from the outside air.
"Have you laid any eggs?" Skids asked
"No" I replied
Skids wanted to keep talking but I zoned out thinking of roosters and such as a young hen might.
"Jenny are you paying attention?"
I snapped out of it realizing that Skids was talking the whole time.
"I'm sorry" I said
"I zoned out a bit there" I tried to not seem like a total jerk.
Skids yelled "stop thinking of boys and start thinking of more important things!"
"It's not my fault that I'm bored and lonely I replied."
Skids sat on the roost and gently tucked her head under her wing. The cold air flows across my feet, I shiver and hop up to the roost to sleep. I close my eyes dreaming of the day I won't be so alone.
Chapter two
Spring is coming. I no longer have a need for a rooster at my side. I now focus on egg-laying and my studies. I do not need a boyfriend.
*Time passes*
It is now Spring, the farmer brought new chickens to the farm, all of them being girls. I fall asleep that night without thought of roosters. I wake up late the next morning, it smelled good outside so I sat out there on the external perch feeling the cool morning breeze run through my feathers.
It was only then when I saw the farmer's daughter holding something black in the distance. I got up to investigate the, sun was just getting bright, barely peeking over the treetops . I then realized what she was carrying, it was a rooster, a very handsome one.
His ebony feather shined blue, purple, and green in the sunlight. I feel a burst of energy. Suddenly, I am light on my feet and feel warm. The Farmer's Daughter opens the gate letting me free to wander.
Chapter three
She sets down the rooster. He stumbles a bit then stands tall scanning the area he locks eyes with me for a split second. His eyes were deep brown, focused, and alert.
I Look Away shyly hoping he did not notice my stare. He fixes a feather on his chest that the farmer's daughter had accidentally messed up. All the hens in the field had come up to greet him, I was in the back of the crowd. He seemed scared, and all the stories of roosters said that they were Fearless. All of the hens quiet down to let him speak.
His voice was deep and crisp
"ummm, hello" he said shyly.A voice from the crowd asks what is your name? "Conan" he replies
in a manner that seems very unsure. He clears his throat and continues in a much more confident way
"I am here to guard you from Hawks and such"
I could not see him very well from where I was and the hens dispersed and so did he. Later that night I sat under the starts dozing off and waking up next morning in the same spot. I woke up and sat near the door waiting for the farmer to let us out of our run.
chapter four
Once let out, I started my regular routine. Later that day I spot Conan. He was trying to get into the feed and he jumped up to the feed onto a bowl, tripping and falling with the bowl landing on top of him. He quickly shoves off the bowl and shakes off. He looks around to check if anyone saw his clumsy mistake.
