"No dad, I said at 3," I held my phone to my ear in my right hand as I walked through Boston airport at a quick pace, dragging my suitcase behind me with my left hand.
I heard my dad curse softly on the other side of the phone before letting out a long sigh. "Well Julie can't get you, she's on a business trip." He paused for a moment before asking, "How about Susan?"
"Rodrick's mom Susan?" I asked, "What's she gonna tell Rodrick when she comes to pick me up from the airport? The whole point of a surprise is not knowing what's gonna happen."
"Well I can't think of anyone else," dad said, "And you can't just take an uber to their house."
I sighed, getting to the plane gates just in the knick of time. "Fine. I'll call her when I get there. Love you."
"Love you too," he said, before I heard the beeping on the other line.

After the 6 hour flight, I got off the plane and walked through the airport, stopping by a set of seats and sitting down.
I looked in the window at my reflection. My hair had just been recoloured white and recut to just above my shoulder . My eye make up was evident with light mascara and a semi thick eyeliner line on my eyelids and a thin line under my eyes, but it was no where near as packed on like it was in high school. My right nostril carried a plain silver nose ring and I wore my mother's silver bangle and small silver hoop earrings.
I wore a plain black jumper and a pair of light blue boyfriend jeans with the knees ripped, revealing my large hole fishnets underneath. I also wore a pair of black leather boots with a slight heel.
It had been a gruelling 4 years at Emerson and I was exhausted. Film was definitely a subject that you needed to be dedicated towards to fully pursue it. I didn't think it'd be all that difficult, but oh boy was I wrong. Assignments got harder and more time consuming and I barely go enough free time to do anything. Keeping in contact with Rodrick was hard work, but somehow we've managed to make it last this far.
I dialled Susan's number and waited for her to pick up. When she did, I waited for her to move to a secluded location before hearing her voice in a whisper. "Hey Demi. How long until you get here?"
"About that," I sighed, "Can you pick me up?"
"Oh boy," Susan said to herself, knowing she'd have to think of a quick lie to tell Rodrick. "Yeah, of course sweetie. I'll see you soon."
I smiled gratefully, even though she couldn't see, and hung up. I grabbed my carry on baggage and proceeded through the airport. Once I got through security, I went out to the main lobby and waited for a few minutes before I saw Susan's car pull up in the parking bay. I walked towards the back of the car and put my suitcase in there, before walking around to the front of the car and taking a seat in the passenger seat.
"Love the hair, Demi!" Was the first thing Susan said to me as I got in.
"Thank you," I smiled as we started driving towards Plainview.
Susan and I made small talk as she drove us towards the Heffley house. I kept my gaze out the window and watched as we passed the diner and the park, where I saw two teenagers gazing up at the sky with their hands intertwined. I couldn't help but smile to myself before they eventually were out of view. I watched excitedly as we pulled into my old street and into the Heffley's driveway.
Susan unbuckled her seatbelt and almost ran out of the car. "You knock at the front door, and I'll tell Rodrick to go get it," she said, nodding enthusiastically.
I laughed and nodded along, not noticing how much I missed Susan until now. She was a sweet soul with such a pure heart, and she reminded me so much of what my mom was like once.
I got out of the car and made my way around to the front of the house. I looked up, examining the familiar features of the house before me. It looked the exact same, maybe even more welcoming after 5 years. I walked up to the front door and, after taking a few breaths to calm my nerves, knocked on the door.
"Rodrick!" I heard Susan's terribly disguised calm voice through the front door, "Could you get the door?"
Almost as soon as I had mentally prepared myself to see my boyfriend for the first time in 5 years, the teenage boy that I once knew as the douchey bad boy drummer from LÖDED DIPER with his curly brown hair, wide brown eyes and messy eyeliner had changed. Instead, the young man who stood in front of me was a mature looking guy with short, slightly messy hair, tired brown eyes and a dark stubble on his chin and around his mouth.
His eyes instantly lit up when he saw me and I squealed when he ran to me and picked me up. He spun me around in his arms as I laughed happily. He placed us down before crashing his lips onto mine eagerly. I happily returned the kiss, feeling his lips on mine making me practically melt into his arms.
He hesitantly pulled away from me and licked his lips as he looked into my eyes. I shrugged and whispered, "Happy Birthday, baby."
