Tris

Chapter 22

*a few days later

I wake up in Tobias's arms, and look into his blue eyes. With all the tragic I've gone through, I'd be happy to get lost in them forever, or teleported to a better world. Maybe they could even swallow me whole.

His arms are wrapped around me, cradling me like a baby. That's at least how I feel: helpless, and new to this world.

"Tris," he says, eyes sparking like waves in a stormy sea. "How are you feeling?" My leg lightly throbs, as if it has a heartbeat of its own. "Fine," I say, sounding as truthful as possible. Sometimes he can even read my slightest doubt.

As his fingers touch my face, electricity races through my every muscle, vein, and fiber. Adrenaline speeds through me, enhancing my awareness, and filling my every limb with energy. It's like whenever he touches me, my body absorbs some of his strength.

I roll over into his chest, lying my head down on him. As I close my eyes, he presses his lips on my forehead. Minutes feel like seconds, and before I know it, half an hour has passed. Neither of us want to end this moment, so we both lie perfectly still as if time has been frozen. Maybe if war hadn't happened, we could stay like this forever, and get lost in our own world.

After a few hours, Tobias asks,"Do you want to take a walk?" My leg has finally healed enough for me to get out of bed, so I reply,"I'd love to."

We walk into the cafeteria to get something to eat. After a few minutes, I grab a small blueberry muffin because I decided I wasn't hungry. It taste sweet, and the blue berries are fresh.

Once I finish, I find Tobias, who somehow found cake to eat for breakfast. His face is full of disappointment when he says,"This isn't nearly as good as Dauntless Cake." I laugh, which makes him mad, but he eventually joins me.

After we're done eating, we walk around the new Abnegation. Nearby, we hear a train horn, blaring through the wind. Seconds after it passes, the sound still rings through my ears.

After it stops, I look up at Tobias. "I hope the other Dauntless are okay." Wind rushes through my hair, and I continually brush it out of my face so I can look at Tobias. "I do too, but we can't go back." Maybe we can, I think to myself. Tobias must see a look in my eyes, or an expression on my face, because he says,"Tris, don't you dare." I laugh, even though it isn't funny. Okay, maybe it is a little funny. Tobias gives me a 'what are you doing?' face, but starts to laugh with me. I wish it could stay this way, us talking and laughing, and especially loving each other, for the rest of our lives. But it can't. Someone, anyone, could ruin my life by pulling a trigger. In one gunfire, Tobias could be gone.

He puts his hand on my face, gliding his fingers down my jawbone. "You wouldn't do that, would you?" I shake my head. "I love you, Tobias. After Erudite, I'll never put my or your life in danger again." My voice is weak, like I'm about to cry. "It's okay, Tris. I love you too." I stand onto my tip-toes, and kiss Tobias. My hand runs through his Abnegation cut brown hair, and he does the same to mine, sending a chill up my spine. My life is perfect, and I hope it will stay this way. But then I hear screams, and suddenly realize, it won't.
