"Jasmine," I speak into the receiver.
"Ella?! Thank god you're okay!" She yells. I can tell she's experiencing a mix of anger and relief from her distressed tone.
"Jasmine, I'm so sorry," I start.
"What's happened?!" She fusses.
"I'm alright, I'm better, actually," I reassure her before continuing. "I'm not in Colorado anymore"
"You left?!" Jasmine questions in disbelief.
"Yes. I'm in LA now," I state clearly.
"But-" she begins but I cut her off, already knowing what she's going to say.
"I know. I'm an awful friend. I'm so sorry I didn't see you before I left. I just had to get out of there - but I know that's no reason for-"
"It's okay," she stops me, "I totally understand"
"You do?" I'm surprised.
"Yeah. I get it. But there's also another reason why I called" she admits gingerly.
"What's that?" I prod.
"It's Connor. He's looking for you"
No, no, no.
"Where is he?" I rush my words.
"You're fine. He's still in Colorado. He said he texted you multiple times but, of course, you didn't reply."
I blocked his number a while back. Jasmine's not aware of that. She doesn't know what happened between Connor and I. All she knows is that we had an argument, and that was it.
"I don't want to talk to him." I tell her.
"You don't have to. I'm just glad you're okay." Jasmine admits.
"Thanks, Jas. I really miss you,"
"Me too, Ella. We'll see each other soon though, right?" She asks, hopeful.
"Yes. Of course," I wasn't sure when or how but I had to see my best friend again.
"Great," her tone gives away more relief.
"Oh, and I need one small favour," I request, even though I'm aware I'm in no place to ask for favours from my best friend whom I abandoned.
"Promise me that you won't tell Connor anything. He can't find out where I am." I say clear as day. I wouldn't have asked if it wasn't the most important thing in the world.
"I promise. Did something else happen between you guys?"
Yes.
"No, we're fine. I just don't want him in my life" I explain in the vaguest of terms. I hated keeping things from her.
"Okay, no problem." She agrees.
"You're the best Jasmine" I tell her and tears gradually blossom from my tear ducts. My voice doesn't reveal this.
"I've gotta go now, but I'll come visit you sometime," Jas tells me.
"Thank you for calling me. I've got an apartment here, there's plenty of room for you" I inform her, immediately picturing what I imagine her reaction would be like when she sees this place.
"An apartment?" She beams through the phone.
"Mhmm,"
"You'll have to tell me all about it another time, Mum's waiting on me. Talk soon!" She clumps her sentences together, hurriedly.
"See you!"
