I hear the clock, ticking, its annoying high pitch frequency echoing in my head. Its almost the end of senior year. We're learning about Indian tribes. "Mmm my favorite" Mrs. Farris pauses and pulls down her big, round, thick lensed, reading glasses and looks directly at me.
there's a long awkward silence making all the students look back at me.
"Zoe, open your book and find the page we're on" she said with her soggy wrinkly lips.
I gave her a blank stare as I blew a big bubble with my hubba bubba bubble gum. Mrs. Farris's jaw dropped.
"Go spit out your gum little sass" she said pushing her glasses back up the bridge of her nose.
"Little sass" was her nickname for me. I stood up rolling my eyes. I walked slowly over to the garbage, subtly stomping my foot each step I took.
I chewed my gum in half, spit out one half, and tucked the other in the space between my molars and my cheek.
Mrs. Farris glared at me and said "let me see"
I opened my mouth and and lifted up my tongue and showed her the roof of my mouth.
She squints as she examines my mouth. Nods and says "ok, go sit"
I pull a note from my pocket and slyly slip it onto Becky's desk. Becky is my best friend and has been my best friend since 3rd grade. We're planning to spend the whole summer together and to travel to England and a lot of states all over America.
We've been saving up money since 6th grade. Babysitting, doing lawn work, and Becky even got a job at McDonalds.
I got to my seat and started twirling my hair with my pencil. I looked up at the clock. There were literally 3 minutes until summer vacation. Every minute passed painfully slow. I gazed out the window. Blanking out all noise around me.
Mrs. Farris annoying voice interrupts my silence.
She looks at her watch and says "oh look guys, 1 more minute till summer vacation officially begins. But you guys can't leave till Zoe presents a little summary of what we just learned about."
I looked at her and and raised my eyebrow and sassily said "are you kidding me?"
Mrs. Farris raises her voice and says "I don't need any attitude from you, little sass"
I role my eyes and stand up and grab my books and say "sorry that this lesson was so painfully boring that I couldn't pay attention to a thing that this prune was saying. Anyway...have a good summer, DISMISS!"
Mrs. Farris laughs and then puts her hands on her hips and says "did you just refer to me as a prune?!"
I smirk and say "your the only thing wrinkly enough in this classroom to be referred to as one." Everyone cheers and applauds and runs out of the room.
I quickly slip in with the crowd to avoid contact with Mrs. Farris.
I hear Becky calling my name so I slither my way through the crowd to her. We run to our lockers and grab our stuff and run out to the busses.
We sat in the middle of the bus where no one sits. We pulled out our money and our paper plans and start to discus where we should go first. We were thinking California should be last because there is going to be a "End of Summer party" there, and why should we have to drive all the way there from somewhere else just to go to some party. But it is supposed to be grand. We've never been to that party, but almost everyone in the school is going, and each year, everyone says its the most amazing party they've ever been to.
