Can't Sleep

I woke up to the sound of crickets chirping outside my window. I went to open the curtains only to find that it was still dark out. I decided to check the time. Aw man, 5:30? I thought as I took my phone with me into the bathroom. Maybe standing under the lights for a while would eventually urge me to go to back to sleep.

Suddenly my trance was interrupted by a low "Up already?" It was Jesse, propping himself against the doorway. "Morning..." I responded groggily, staring at the mirror. Jesse began to look in the mirror beside me, probably trying to get a better look at my face. "Now, why are you up this early, darlin'?" he asked, putting his arm around my shoulder. "It's nothing, really." I said in response. I could tell Jesse wasn't quite buying it because he made a stern look. "(Y/N), don't lie to me. I've been with you long enough to know whether or not you're lying."

Well, I can't argue with that.

"I just can't stop thinking... about what happened 2 years ago."

Of course I wouldn't forget about the tragedy that scarred me for life. It was 2 years ago, during the Omnic Uprising.

There were bullets flying, fire plunging the place into chaos. All I could do was run for my life. My mind and heart were racing trying to focus on staying alive, but the fact that Jesse was also in danger pained me at the time. Hell, it still pains me now. The Omnics were ruthless. I just kept running from those gun-wielding machines into an alley, and before I knew it, I was cornered. At the time I thought I was gone.

Dead.

Done for.

I couldn't move. I couldn't see straight. I could only feel myself getting lifted. Only, it was by the neck. With a metal arm. Not pretty. I had almost lost all my hope, until I was dropped. Huh. I guess the feeling of near death didn't last very long. I gasped for air and I could only see a blur of what I thought was Jesse for a second until everything faded to black.

Guess I didn't die. Well, I know I didn't die, I'm here right now. I guess things don't always have to come to an end so quickly.

* * *

Suddenly, I was pulled into a hug. I guess I spaced out for a bit. It was quiet for a few seconds. Jesse broke the silence by saying softly, "It's ok, (Y/N), everything's gonna be ok." as he caressed my head. I love it when he does that. The thing I hate, though, is seeing him cry. Eventually, I started to cry too. Although it happened 2 years ago, the pain still lingered.

"I love you.."

"I love you too, (Y/N)."

I hated bringing up the topic of the incident, but maybe our eyes just need to be washed by our tears once in a while to have a clearer view.

And my view was much clearer now that my stomach was roaring.

Jesse and I laughed and he said, "Let's go get something to eat, darlin'."
