Dean and Aaliyah were best friends since they were 3 years old. They were neighbors, so they always played together. Dean, who was born a year before Aaliyah, always felt like he needed to protect her just like she was his little sister.
Their families were friends too, what made them happier because thanks to that, they could spend more time with the other.
No one understood how children that young could have a strong friendship like that.
When we asked them what they thought friendship was, they said :
"To me, friendship is something supposed to make you smile, laugh every day. When you feel down, a friend will be here for you and help you feeling better, a friend will stand by your side no matter what. Even if they have problems because of that. They are willing to do anything and everything for you."
And their parents always were speechless. They even thought that their kids were in love with each others, but  they realized that they obviously just were best friends.

One day, when she was nine, Aaliyah waited for Dean in her garden, he always came at 4 PM. When he arrived, she jumped in his arms just like every days, she couldn't stop smiling. But he didn't, and she knew something wasn't right.
"What's wrong, Dean ?" She asked, very worried.
"Nothing, let's just, spend a lot of time together, right ?" He said with a soft smile.
Aaliyah knew his smile was just there to comfort her, but she didn't say anything, even though she knew something was about to happen.

They stayed together during five hours, talking about anything and everything, when Dean left. Before leaving, he hugged Aaliyah tight one more time and said :
"Don't forget, I'll always be here, and I'll always love you. Whenever you feel down, just look at the necklace I gave you, and you'll see I'm not really far."
She smiled and nodded before pulling him away, not really understanding why he said that, because she knew they would see each others the next day. When he looked down at her, she could see he was crying. She kissed his cheek and told him :
"I love you more Dean."

The next day, at 4 PM, Aaliyah sat in the grass and waited for Dean. But he never came. She rang and knocked at his door, but no one answered. The 9-year-old girl got a bit worried. She came back home and told her parents :
"Dean disappeared !"
"No, sweetie, come here" Said her mom before pulling her closer.
"Then where is he ?" Asked Aaliyah
"They moved to New York City, because of his father's job. They left yesterday night."
"What ?" She said, tears in her eyes "But..he didn't tell me that ! He is my best friend. We are in Los Angeles and New York is to the opposite of the country ma' !"
Her mom hugged her tight, but it didn't change a thing to how Aaliyah was feeling. She felt like her best friend betrayed her, and she hated him.
