Public executions were someones twisted, sick idea of a family day out. Wether it was a hanging, a burning or a beheading, it was a great excuse to have a party.
Already the public were preparing for the execution scheduled for this very afternoon. The lady wearing the ocean blue dress looked out of her door, and shook her head. The talk of the town was that the man was a sorcerer, a powerful one too...
Well that was what she had heard anyway. Nowadays there were many people who were selected at random to pose as sorcerers so that the blood thirsty rabble could have their family day out.
She turned away from the door to the broom, which was sweeping the floor on its own. She glanced at the pots and pans, which were also cleaning themselves and at the fire, which burned with a bright blue flame in the corner of the small room. She had not long been in the city, but already she had seen too many deaths, magical and non-magical alike.
All of a sudden, the sound of trumpets filled the air. Startled, she looked around and saw a large, screaming crowd gathering around the elevated execution platform. She went to the door to see what the fuss was about. There was never this much excitement, even for a magical execution. Then she saw him.
The man was dressed in emerald green and had black hair, which fell over one of his bright green eyes. He had his hands tied behind his back and an ugly looking bruise blooming across his cheek. Whoever he was, he was an important wizard, there was no doubting it. She watched as he was tied to a tall wooden stake atop a large pyre of straw and tar soaked wood. She forced her way through the crowd as he was stripped of his wand, and forced to watch as it was snapped into two before being set alight.
As she reached the platform, the burly, hooded executioner moved forwards, holding a flaming torch in his hand. Violent drum beats elevated the tension in the air, as the fur clad city-crier stepped forwards, yelling out for all the crowd to hear,
"Any last words, sorcerer?" the crowd roared, expressing disapproval at the set back. The wizard in green looked up at him, then let his gaze roam over the crowd. The cheering and shouting was silenced as his intense green eyes fell on them all. Then he spoke.
Magic will destroy you all.
She frowned. He certainly was important. It wasn't every day a Parseltongue was executed. She had never heard the language of the serpent before. His hissing words were harsh against her ears and they echoed across the silent square. She had no idea what he had just said, but she could tell that he wasn't forgiving his executioner or praying for these misguided people. No, there was hatred and malice dripping from his words, clear as the morning sky...
Then the executioner stepped forwards and threw the torch at his feet. The wood and straw instantly burst into flame. The lady in blue gripped her wand tightly as the fire began to grow and lick at his ankles, then at his chest, then his face. As the flame grew higher and higher, she could hear his voice hissing through the crackling of the sticks and the screams of delight of the crowd, still cursing his captors with increased rage.
Then she raised her wand,
"Aguamenti!" she shouted. The people around her screamed with shock, as a raging torrent of water streamed from the tip of her wand, gushing over the platform and into the blaze, extinguishing it almost immediately. All eyes were now on her, as she clambered up onto the platform. The executioner lumbered towards her, wielding a heavy looking axe, but she simply flicked her wand to the side, sending the weapon spinning from his grasp. In the corner of her eye, she could see the man she had just saved struggling with the charred, brittle ropes around him. She saw him flip an unfortunate guard over his shoulder and pull the mans sword from its scabbard.
The witch looked away as the wizard in green slashed the nearest soldier's stomach open, his eyes burning with rage. The next man's blade clashed briefly with the wizard's but was soon knocked from his hand. The wizard didn't listen to the pleading, the soldier was decapitated by a single swipe of his opponents weapon. As the wizard danced gracefully in and out of the soldiers' increasingly hurried and foolish attacks, she heard his snake voice rising to a triumphant scream as he cut down the final guard with savagery defying human capability. The witch saw him leap into the midst of the crowd, laughing wildly as the people scattered like terrified ants.
She followed him as quickly as her dress would allow, shouting,
"We need to get out of here!" at the sound of her voice, he spun around to face her. She found herself suddenly cringing before his intense, manic green eyed gaze,
"Why?" he questioned, "Why should we run from them?"
"Because there's fifty odd of them and only two of us, with only one wand between us!" she answered, as a second batch of soldiers began advancing into the empty courtyard, the wizard turned to face them, swinging his sword expertly,
"That may be," he snarled, "And they will pay with their lives for destroying my wand!" The witch knew their time was running out, he was set in killing every non-magical man, woman and child in this city,
"Sir Slytherin!" she cried desperately, grabbing his arm. He looked around at her,
"It has been a long time since someone has addressed me like that..." he said quietly,
"That is who you are... Isn't it?" she asked, keeping a wary eye on the soldiers who were trying to pluck up enough courage to attack. Salazar Slytherin's eyes lost some of their insanity for a second, then he looked down at her, before grabbing her hand and pulling her after him as he dashed from the courtyard. When they saw the retreat being made, the soldiers leapt into action and began to give chase. The witch let herself get dragged this way and that, already unsure of where in the city they were,
"Do you even know where we're going?" she cried. Slytherin glanced back at her,
"I've lived in this accursed city for most of my life!" he explained as they ran. Suddenly, he skidded to a stop,
"Here," he said as he untied the reins of a horse tethered outside a farrier. He tossed her the reins of the slender grey mare, and released a second, tall, handsome, powerful looking animal. He swung himself up onto the black horse's back as she did the same. She watched as he kicked the horse into a gallop and she followed through the streets behind him.
"There's the gates!" she called to him.
"Keep riding!" he shouted back as they galloped beneath the tall stone arch and over the drawbridge.
"Hey! Stop right there!" came the gatekeeper's voice as they sped out onto the road ahead. The witch saw him step in front of them, and reined her horse to a stop. Next to her, she expected Slytherin to do the same, but instead, he pulled his steed back into a rear, causing the gatekeeper to dive to one side to avoid the magnificent animal's thrashing hooves,
"Go!" Slytherin shouted to her. As they spurred their horses onwards into the forrest beyond, a feeble rain of arrows began to fly from the battlements, but only succeeded in piercing the dusty road.
