Lily's hands shook as she ran them through her hair, tugging at the ends hard enough to pull away with strands in her fingers. She couldn't even remember how the fight between the two of them started. She couldn't remember how the lamp that her mother had bought her when she moved in with Keaton had ended up on the floor, broken into several jagged pieces. She doesn't know why when she looks up she sees Keaton, breathing heavy and mouth drawn down into a scowl. But what Lily could remember is that his voice was so loud when he yelled at her, drowning out her own shrill responses. She could remember his eyes going from a clear blue to dark and stormy as the argument intensified. And she could remember the salty trail that the tears left on her cheeks as she let them hit the floor. But the one thing Keaton could remember is how he could barely hear her when she uttered the words, "You've changed, you're are not the same person that I fell in love with."
Keaton couldn't help but wince as she let the door slam shut behind her, the sound echoing through the now quiet room. His eyes trailed to where she had been standing before trailing to the broken lamp right next it. Sighing, he ran his hands over his face and leaned back against the wall. You're not the same person that I fell in love with. His chest tightened at the memory of what Lily had said, and how he could see in her eyes that he had meant it. Closing his eyes, he tried to stop her voice that was playing like a mantra in his head. You've changed, you're not the same person that I fell in love with. Maybe Keaton wasn't the same person that he was when they started dating two years ago, but that still didn't stop the tears from rolling down his cheeks.
Two hours later, Lily's eyes were still puffy and red as she laid in their shared bedroom alone. It was hard to believe that they had moved in together only three short months ago. She pushed away the thought and buried her face into her pillow, mascara smearing the white case. She barely moved when she heard a quiet knock on the door, followed by the turning of the lock. "Babe?" Keaton's voice was gentle as he entered the room, afraid that if he talked to loud they might start another screaming war. The side of the bed opposite of Lily dipped under his weight as he settled in, hesitating a moment before putting his hand on the small of her back. "Baby?" His voice was still a whisper, "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to hurt you." She was quiet except for a few quiet sniffles. "Come on Lil, roll over so we can talk about this please." He was patient as she slowly turned, taking in her bloodshot eyes and smeared makeup. "What do you want to talk about?" Her voice was broken from the screaming and crying. He sighed, "Us, everything. Why is this happening?" He looked at her with sad eyes as he waited for her response. Lily simply shrugged as tears wet her eyes. "Maybe we weren't meant to last forever, maybe we were just meant to have a good run."
