Ross' POV
I woke up alone. Laura's side of the bed was completely empty. I yawned, stretching slightly as my feet made contact with the carpetted floor. I slipped a shirt over my head and looked outside. It was still dark. 'What time is it?' I checked the clock, seeing it was 4:12 am. A feeling of confusion washed over me as I made my way through the house. I walk into the office, seeing her with her forehead against the table. She isn't asleep, because I can hear her mumbling. I walk closer, seeing her head is actually against a stack of papers. And I can finally make out what she's saying. Singing actually.
"You know, there ain't no rest for the wicked. Money don't grow on trees. I got bills to pay, I got mouths to feed, there ain't nothin in this world for free.." She sings lightly.
"Laura?" I whisper. Her head shoots up and looks back at me.
"Ross! What are you doing up?" She asks, lifting herself away from the chair.
"I was going to ask thee same thing." I say and giggle. Her face is serious, yet a look of amusement is filling her eyes.
"I'm working on the bills. Gotta get done sometime." She says and shrugs.
"Do it tomorrow. How long have you been up, honey? It's nearly 4:30." I say and take her in my arms.
"I can't do it tomorrow Ross. We have responsibilities to take care of. And I woke up about an hour ago. I'm not tired. Couldn't get back to sleep." She says and nestles her head to my chest.
"What bills are you working on?" I ask.
"Electric. Cable. The usual." She says and sits back down. I look at all of the papers, seeing her neat handwriting all over the place.
"Anything I can help with?" I ask and lay my head in my hand. She stays quite for a minute, typing into her calculator. She pushes her glasses back up onto her nose with the tip of her index finger. Her hair is in a messy bun. She looks so focused, something that will never change about her.
"After we take care of the electric, the cable, all of the medical bills with Austin, the house, and the car, we will have $673.56 left until I get paid in two weeks." She says and huffs. She has always been such a math wiz. Laura recently got a new job as an 8th grade Honors Algebra I teacher, something she has wanted to do since the day we said I do. I couldn't be more proud. She looks at me and bites her lip.
"Ross. We aren't making enough money on a teacher/rockstar salary. I hate to say this, but if we're wanting to live and not just barely make it, you're going to have to get a second job." She says and lowers her gaze.
"What do you mean? I make plenty of money and so do you." I say and watch as she tries to smile.
"I know Ross. But with the new baby, and Ally going to dance and having her tutor, that costs extra. Plus, I mean, we have to eat sometime. And doing extra things like going out to the movies and dinner dates, we need money for that too. We just aren't making enough to live." She says and gets up.
"I.. I guess I'll try to get a job." I say and she attacks me with kisses.
"I love you Ross, but this is just something that has got to get done." She says. I nod, knowing she is very serious. I pick her up and she squeels.
"What are you doing!" She yells and laughs.
"Taking you to bed. We can finish this in the morning, okay?" I ask and she nods.
"Fine fine." She says and laughs. I carry her back to bed and lay her down.
"Get some rest babe." She says and laughs. I nod.
"Goodnight." I say and wait for a response.
"Goodnight Laura." I say once again. I turn over once she doesn't reply and find her asleep.
"Not tired my ass." I say and finally reside in my own slumber.
