The birds chirped melodiously in the backyard trees and when I woke up the sun stretched his long yellow arms through the window and greeted me with warmth. It was 6: 45 am so I began getting ready for my morning run. I wore my grey leggings with a peach sweatshirt and matching sneakers.
I took up my mp3 player and earphones and headed downstairs. Mom was already up and preparing breakfast for us.
“Morning mom.”
“Morning Bree. Going to run?” she asked hugging me lightly.
“Yes mom. It’s been a while since I had been down the Mountain side trail.”
“Okay dear be back my eight for breakfast.”
“I will.”
“Love you.”
I began my playlist and started jogging down Garfield Avenue towards the mountain trail. The morning air was crisp and fresh and the summer animals were awake and pretty. The sun cast a vivid picture on the canvas of the sky, set in contrast to the greenery of the trees and shrubs.
I reached the peak and stopped for a minutes to take pictures of my surroundings and to just enjoy nature. I then checked my watch then headed downhill towards my home.
Out of nowhere a man in a hoody came and jumping on me.
“Get off me!!” I began screaming.
“Get off!!! Help!!!”
The man wore a mask so I could not identify him. He was very muscular and strong and my kicks and punches were of no avail. He pinned me down with his strong right arm then used his other arm to begin unbuckling his belt.
“No!!!!!!!!!!!” I continued screaming. “Somebody he-“
Then another man, in his teens came running to my rescue. He tore the man off me then urged me to run. Propping myself up on my elbows I was so petrified I couldn’t move for a few moments. Then I got up turned round and ran straight home.
✨✨✨✨✨
“He was …….uhh…..big,” I stammered “and strong……...and he wore a mask…..but he was white and I….I….screamed a he didn’t stop until the other male came to help me.”
“All right Bree, clam down,” said Dave handing me a cup of water.
My mother caressed my back and told Dave’s secretary everything that I told her before we reached Uncle Dave’s office at the Alabama State Troopers.
I was still trembling as I tried to tell them everything that I remembered. It was really a rough morning and I hadn’t even had breakfast yet.
“Mom can we leave?” I asked, as soon as the reporter was through.
“Let her go, Thelma” said Uncle Dave to my mom. “I will come by later on to stay with you guys.
“Thanks again, Uncle Dave” I managed to say as I walked out of his office with my mother.
On our way home from the police station, we heard the story on breaking news. The reporter said that citizens should be on the lookout for a white medium height muscular man with red hair, as he was a suspect in a recent attack on a young lady. They also urged the young man who helped me to come forward and assist the police in the investigation.
Speaking of which I was beginning to like my mysterious rescuer.
“It will be alright” said mom reassuringly as we drove into the garage.
“I just want to sleep, mom I’ll eat breakfast later” I replied.
I went up to my room and called my best friend and told her what happened. She was very worried and said she would come as soon as possible.
“Okay” I replied, “but am going to sleep.”
“Yes you need it Bree.”
