In Language Arts class, we end up doing Partner Reading. I think of partnering with Kennedy, and go to grab a book. But then, there's a light tap on my shoulder. I turn to see Willnia, in all her glory.
"Hey there, friend! Partners?" she greets in her lovely voice. It sounds like birds singing in the spring.
"Uh, sure, I guess." I say, slightly confused. Why would someone like her want to be my partner?
"Great! Come on, let's read this one!" she smiles as she holds up the magazine article titled 'Friends'. I remember this one.
"Okay."
We sit down at her seat, me beside her, where Jordan usually sits. Speaking of, his name wasn't changed, and his reputation with the girls---I mean boys---is the same. It's just one after the other, three per week.
Although I've read this article many times before, I feel so much more interested when Willnia reads the words to me. I think about each page with a new light. I feel like she makes me understand the universe, just being near her.
My hand rests on the table, holding the right side of the book steady. Willnia turns the page, and her hand brushes mine. Instantly, her face is pink, and mine feels warm---I must look the same.
"Sorry about that." she giggles nervously, refusing to meet my eyes.
I look at her. "Don't be."
Her eyes flick up to gaze at me, and I smirk at her. She can't help but smile back.
Day two is shaping up pretty well.

"I love Math." I say to no one in particular as I open my textbook. We have to do some questions about graphs and the like.
Although, how am I to work when Willnia is all I can think about.
We had a moment there. It was definitely a moment if there ever was one.
And if anyone will know about moments, it's Kennedy.
Hey, at least she's good at something. Because right now, she seems to have given up entirely on the questions and is just staring at her blank notebook, drawing swirls in the corner.
"You're crazy." she says. "Who loves Math?"
"Me."
"But you're weird. I'm talking about normal people."
"So I'm guessing you're not included in that?"
She swats my arm. "Shut up, Wilson."
I laugh and continue with question three.

It's Lunch now, and Kennedy and I stand in the hallway.
"Are you gonna ditch me for Willnia again? I had to partner up with Kami earlier, and it was a pretty interesting experience. One I would rather not repeat." she complains, referring to Kamden's female counterpart. "Him and Wendy are just as annoying as their boy versions."
"Well, we'll have the rest of the day together---mostly against my will. In fact, we'll have to spend almost every moment together for as long as we're here." I point out.
"Ugh." she sighs in disgust.
"I can't be that bad." I put my hands on my hips.
"Oh, you can. Maybe I should tell your little girlfriend about your night-farting problem." she smirks, and my eyes widen.
"No! I don't do that!" I protest.
"Don't do what?" asks a heart-melting voice behind me.
"And there she is now." Kennedy says, crossing her arms. I stare daggers at her before spinning around to see a beaming Willnia. She's swaying, her dress shifting back and forth from the movement.
"Nothing. Hey, would you like to hang out?" I inquire.
Kennedy gasps as Willnia says, "I'd love to! Come on, let's go to that Buddy Bench downstairs. If we're lucky, it'll be empty enough to sit on!"
She grabs my hand, dragging me past Kennedy, who exaggerates a look of betrayal.
When we reach the abandoned Buddy Bench, Willnia plops down on the blue and white wood, pulling me down to sit beside her. She laughs suddenly. "Would you look at that! I match the bench!" she giggles, and I can't help but chuckle myself; she's just so adorable. "I was going to wear yellow today, too. Good thing I didn't, or this wouldn't have happened."
"Yellow's my favorite color." I comment, and she gasps.
"That's my favorite color, too!" she exclaims.
"Cool. Wow, we have so much in common, don't we?" I remark.
"We do!" she flashes her pearly whites, clasping her hands together in front of her.
We're quiet for a moment, the silence comfortable. Then, I speak up. "You know, you're pretty cool, Willnia."
"You, too, Willie!"
I love that nickname. I would hate it from anyone else, but from her, it feels like an honor just to have her say my name.
