Chapter One

It's A Wonderful College Life

BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEE-

Sara Park groaned and slammed her hand on the beeping clock radio on her bedside table, which, sadly, only knocked it onto the floor and made it crack in three places. "Crap," she muttered.

"Sara, are you up yet?" her mother called from the kitchen.

"Um, yeah, one sec. I broke the clock again, but I think it still works."

"Well I hope you didn't break it again. This is your third clock."

"I know, Mom!"

Sara crawled out of bed, threw on a tank top and shorts and half-walked- half -ran down the carpeted steps to find two chocolate chip waffles being mediocrely cut up with a fork by her little sister.

"Charlotte, I told you to use a butter knife to cut those waffles," her mom chastised her. "So Sara, are you ready for your first day of college?" her mom asked.

"Yeah, I guess."

Sara thought back to July, when she was enrolled at Notre Dame because the family was worried the osteosarcoma that took her left arm would kill her. Nobody said anything, though. Rule 1 of family: don't tell you're kid there're possibly going to bite it.

So as a result, Sara got her GED after dropping out of school to "spend valued time with family" and "enjoy the wonders the world has to offer" which translates to, "it's easier for you to get chemo when we don't have to pull you out of school."

This was the day her parents would haul her to ND and drop her off so she could live a Wonderful College Life and find her True Calling and Destiny at seventeen years old.

Sara gave a sideways glance at her suitcases and other paraphernalia that would be necessary for the Wonderful College Life she was to lead.

Breaking her reverie of deep thought, she watched her dad trudge down the stairs in his underwear, which was a terrifying and godforsaken sight.

"Dear God, David, put some pants on," said her mother as she balled up a pair of khakis from the clothes she was folding while shaking her head. She tossed them, and it hit him in the face as he smiled.

"Actually, I was thinking about dropping Sara off at school like this, Lynn."

Sara piped up, "Sure, if you plan on blinding everyone you meet."
