Tris

Chapter 28

The guards whip me with their belts, every lash stinging my skin. My screams are constant, and the pain is so overwhelming, making every breath I take labor.

Suddenly, I hear the door open, and the guards stop whipping me. I look up, and my heart skips a beat when I see Tobias.

"Get away from her, now," he says, his voice low, and fierce. He aims his gun at one of the guards. They don't have guns, only belts. "Now!" He moves his gun to the guard's leg, and fires. They scramble, and sprint out of the room.

"Tobias," I croak, words barely coming out of my mouth. He walks over to me, and kneels down. His chilled fingers trace my face, making me shiver. Before I know it, I'm crying, and curl up into his chest. "Tris, it's okay." His voice calms me, but I still can't stop crying. My voice shakes, while I say,"N-no it's n-n-not. All the s-simulations they tr-tried on me w-were about losing you. A-and they f-felt s-so real." My head is cradled in his arms, and he says," Tris, I'm here. I'm never going to let anyone hurt you again." With eyes watering, he says,"Tris, I love you." "I love you too, Tobias." As I stare into his deep, blue eyes, all I can think about is us. Nothing else matters except him and me. And for a moment, the world is perfect, just the two of us.

After a few minutes, which seemed like seconds, Tobias says,"Come on, Tris. We need to leave here. Can you stand?" I nod, and slowly stand up, cringing when I do. Tobias and I start to run, twisting and turning through this maze of hallways.

"We can stop if you're feeling too much pain," Tobias says. Even though I feel like I need to stop, I shake my head. "No, I'm fine."

It feels like we've been in here for hours, but it's only been about thirty minutes. I wonder if this maze will ever end.

We turn a corner, and I guard points his gun at us. Tobias fires his gun, but he is out of bullets. We look at each other, and he puts his hand to his heart, as if to say,'I love you.' The guard points his gun at Tobias, ready to fire.

My parents used to say,'Sacrifice is the greatest love you can give.' I realize that Tobias is the only one left that I love, and I can't let him die.

"Tobias, I love you, and I always will." The guard pulls the trigger, and I push Tobias out of the way, and I watch as he hits the ground. My chest burns, so much that I almost can't handle it, but all I can think is he's safe.
