Darkness. It's the thing I've been used to for most of my life. I can't remember the last time light had hit my eyes. I can't see the birds chirping in the trees, the skies they fly in, or even the ground I walk on. For I am blind. I wasn't always this way though. I hardly remember the times when I could see the beauty of the world I live on. It happened so suddenly... I was walking home from school one day. I was about 9 years old. It was unexpected. As I was walking across the crosswalk, a car suddenly came rushing down the road and they didn't stop. The lady at the wheel was texting on her phone while driving. She didn't see me crossing and before I knew it the car had hit me... it sent my tiny body flying a little ways. I was knocked unconscious immediately. When I had 'woken up', I found I couldn't open my eyes. I then heard a man talking to me. He had told me that I was in the hospital. I could hear my mother's sniffles from inside the room. The doctor informed me about the incident and how I had gone nearly completely blind. The injury I had received from hitting my head on the ground had made my left eye blind. As for the other one, I had a large gash on it and prevented my eye from opening. If they tried to forcefully open it, well, they were afraid it might make it worse. They had tied bandages around my head as to keep me from trying to open my eyes. I didn't know what to say to this.... so I stayed silent. The doctor told me to lay back down and get some rest. Then he and my mother walked out of the room to talk. We stayed at the hospital for the night and went home the next day. My mother informed me of what the doctor told her. She told me that she was taking me out of school. She was going to have me be homeschooled. She said she was going to help me to get used to my blindness. I was homeschooled for about 6 years. Once I turned 16, my life had changed it's course.... that moment changed my life forever...
