The smell of gasoline was strong, almost overpowering, if it wasn't for the thick cloud of exhaust that had settled over the area. The sound of revving engines and the shouting of people made the arena deafening to those who where new. The rest thrived off of breathing in the toxic air and listening to the cacophony of noises. The engines belonged to the racers who performed every weekend, but this time they weren't getting ready for just a regular match. No, this was the competition of the year. Ten racers and one winner, one survivor. Ten racers start but only one will survive. The best of the best and only shall he be rewarded. The reward being a rarity, a trait passed down one blood line, the gift that started when the world ended. This 'gift' rest in my blood now and I am this years reward to the winning racer. I have watched my family members being given away every year except now it's my turn as I have reached eighteen.
Our 'gift' was developed a hundred years ago with the nuclear meltdown that changed the world into a post apocalyptic nightmare. My family's lineage stretches back to the workers of the first nuclear plant to go down. The rumored history was that it was my family who conspired to bring the world into chaos and fate made us forever be mutated as a punishment for our behavior. My family will forever feel pain and loneliness because we were hated by the commoners and the wealthy only wanted to show us off as trophies.
This is my fate, a reward to the soul surviving racer. I was to be used as a trophy and nothing else. I was not to be treated with respect or dignity. I will not be able to make decisions based on what I want or believe in. My purpose was to be a trophy, a body with no brain. I was to follow the orders of my new owner and never disobey. For disobeying could come with a punishment or in severe cases death.
Soon I will be handed to my new owner and my life of serving and pleasing will start.
