Chapter 14
(Kelly’s P.O.V.)
“Babe, why won’t you talk to me?” Ricky asked me while we were sitting in third period. Our free period. I ignored him and kept my head down while continuing my newest drawing. I’ve been giving him the silent treatment for three days straight. I found out that he also knew what happened and yet he never told me.
Why the hell were we kept out of the secret? It made no sense honestly.
“Babe, come on.” He pushed and I had enough. I slammed my pencil down and glared at him. He stared at me wide eyed and waited for my reply.
“Why the hell did I not know about anything? Was I not trustworthy enough?” I asked, placing my stuff down next to me.
“No of course not. You are perfectly trustworthy. It’s just..” Ricky sighed and wrapped his arms around my shoulders, pulling me to lay on his shoulder. I did without protest and let him finish. “It’s just that, James was ashamed of what happened with his relationship. So he just said that the long distance didn’t work out. I‘m sorry I didn’t tell you, it just wasn’t my place to tell.”
I sighed and nodded, turning so my face was buried into his neck. I was just so disappointed in Brandon. He knew better. He was raised better. Mom wouldn’t be too happy if she found out.
The bell rang signalling lunch and fourth period and we both got up without a word. He wrapped his arm around my waist and led me to the cafeteria to meet up with everyone else. Speaking of everyone…
Liz, Josh, and June still knew nothing, James still had bruises from Sunday, and I was still giving him the silent treatment. I knew Liz was suspecting something because every time she asked James about his bruises, he would stay silent and not talk to her. Coming from her, James also ignores her during their free period. God knows what is going to happen today.
Once we had gotten to the table the tension was immediately intensified. It was silent unlike it usually is. James was barely picking at his food while we all just looked around, not daring to say a thing.
That was until Lizzie looked at James and spoke up.
“Hey James. Do you-” “No, Lizzie! I don’t want to tell you why I have bruises on my face! And I don’t need you to acknowledge them every single fucking day! God!” He blew up and angrily stood up from the table, leaving the whole cafeteria silent. He stormed out and everyone looked towards us.
Liz was speechless and she looked to me with her mouth wide open. I could tell she was trying not to cry. She looked back to where James recently stormed off.
“I just wanted to ask him if he knew what the assignment was for Mr. Dale’s class.” She finally said before standing up and leaving the quiet cafeteria. I sighed and looked to Ricky. He looked at me and then looked around to the curious eyes.
“There is nothing to see here! Go back to your food!” Josh shouted and everyone went back to what they were doing yet still gossiping about what just happened. I swear people have nothing better to do.
“I’ll go find Lizzie.” I said and Ricky volunteered to go check on James. Josh and June nodded in understanding and I made my way to the courtyard.
I saw her sitting cross legged right under the tree with her hands in her lap. I really hoped she wasn’t crying.
The closer I got to her the better I could hear the small sniffles coming from her.
‘Note to self, kill James the next time I see him.’ I thought as I sat down next to Lizzie.
She looked to me once I sat down and gave me a sad smile. I placed my hand on her back out of comfort and leaned my head on her shoulder.
