Chance was Dove's best friend since the fourth grade, and her boyfriend in the ninth - eleventh.

Chance committed suicide when he was 17, and left 15 year old Dove with a broken heart.
Chance doesn't agree with Dove's choices since he's died, he's watching her from Heaven and has no way to tell her to be careful.
Chance hopes Dove will join him in Heaven.
