Jason and Jacie safely crossed the border, no one bothered them and Jason didn't seem to spot anything that was out of the ordinary, or he was just good at hiding it. Maybe he just didn't want to scare her?
The next time they stopped, it was in a small town, with a bunch of cute little houses painted with bright colors. There were blue, pink, yellow and red houses. It was actually very rare to see a white one. Jason pulled into a gas station and stopped by one of the pumps. A small, black car pulled into the one to the right of them, and a young man got out. He was dressed like every other young man you might see, but something was odd about him.
He had a handsome, clean shaven face, with the bluest eyes Jacie had ever seen, a lot like her dad's eyes. His hair was as dark and silky as Jacie's dad's as well. In fact, now that she thought about it, that boy looked a lot like how her dad looked when he was around that boy's age.
Jason shook her arm, snapping her out of her staring state. She quickly turned to look at him, slightly startled. "What?"
"I was asking if you were hungry," he said, glancing at the same guy, wondering what she could have been thinking. "Why were you looking at him like that?"
"Like what?"
"Like you know him from somewhere, like you've seen him before," Jason said, raising his eyebrows.
When Jacie looked him in the eyes, she saw a spark of something. Excitement, worry? It was hard to tell. Did Jason know something she didn't? Well, probably. He wasn't an open book that was easy to read at all. He was more like a hidden, mysterious book with clasps that were really hard to get open unless you had the right key. But once you get inside, it's hard to read anything, for it seems like it's in a different language. Then the book closes before you can try and translate anything.
He could tell she was trying to read him, but luckily he was good at hiding it. Instead he gave her a look that said, "Answer me. Now."
"I was just thinking that he was handsome, then I realized he looked a lot like my dad, that's all," Jacie finally blurted out, then feeling kind of awkward. Now Jason knew she had been kind of checking him out.
There was amusement in Jason's eyes. "All right. I was just wondering. Are you hungry, thirsty?"
"A little of both."
"Then come in with me."
As they walked into the small gas station, Jason was looking around a lot. He was doing it in such a way that it looked as though he wasn't suspicious of anything, but Jacie knew better. Something was here, something dangerous. Shouldn't they get back in the car and drive away?
There was only the person at the front desk in the gas station when they entered, but Jason kept looking outside. Now Jacie knew they were being watched, but she tried really hard to act as though she didn't suspect anything unless Jason told her otherwise.
She grabbed a small bag of salty chips off of the shelf and a bottle of water from one of the fridges. Jason grabbed a pocket knife, and slipped it into his jacket. The only reason Jacie saw it was because she had been watching him very carefully, right then wondering if he'd take anything. It was hard to tell, because he did it so subtly and quietly. The person at the front desk was watching them like a hawk, and even he didn't notice what Jason had taken.
Jacie followed Jason to the cashier, but as he handed the five dollars over to the cashier, a man entered the small gas station. He was acting normal and everything, he didn't really look suspicious. Jacie watched him carefully, and was startled to see that when he lifted his arm to grab something from a high shelf, he was wearing that special chest strap to put a gun in. She swore she saw the butt of a pistol.
