Tobias
Chapter 29
As I'm pushed to the floor, I hear a shrilling scream. Tris. Before I can get to her, I run up to the guard, and before he shoots, I hit him hard in the jaw, making him fall to the ground. I grab his gun off the floor, and clip it to my belt.
When I turn to see Tris, she has a bullet straight through her chest. No, no, no, this can't be happening. "Tobias," she mutters, so quiet I can barely hear her. I run to her, kneel down, and put my hands onto her chest to help slow the bleeding.
"Tris, all I need you to do is breathe. Just focus on that, and nothing else." I remove one of my hands from her chest, to see it covered in blood, and use it to carry her. She groans, but keeps breathing just as I told her to.
Tris's blood starts to seep through my fingers in minutes, so I press my hand harder onto her chest. She screams, but I can't lighten the pressure or she will lose more blood. "Tris, I know it hurts, but it will help you." I feel panicked, but my voice sounds calm.
Tris's screams turn into whimpers, and she starts to calm down. "Good job, Tris." Her face is pale, and her baby blue eyes have turned gray. It kills me to see her this way. She's gone through so much already, but I know there will be more to come.
I find the exit, and run out as fast as I can. Tris needs help, and fast, if she's going to survive.
A train horn blares, and I run towards it. This is my only chance to save her. If I miss this train, she won't get help soon enough, and bleed out. I'm not going to let that happen.
When the train arrives, I run along the side of it, and scan my surroundings for an open door. I spot one, and sprint towards it.
My only chance to get in will be to jump straight into the train, not grabbing the handle. When I catch up, I jump, and land into the train, hitting my head hard on the door. My fingers move to my forehead, and feel a deep gash that gushes blood.
"Tris, are you okay?" I wipe my blood onto my pant legs, and put my hands back on Tris's chest. She's gasping for air, and starts to cough blood. She shakes her head, and I realize she can't breathe.
"Tris, this is going to hurt a lot, but try to relax." I place my hand of her chest, and start pushing hard. Her face is turning blue, and she has lost consciousness. After pushing a few times, I hear her rib crack, but I keep doing this because it is the only way to get her breathing.
Once I push thirty times, I place my mouth on hers and blow air into her lungs. After a couple tries, she starts to cough excessively, but starts to breathe normally after a few minutes. I put my hands on her chest again, this time to cover her wound.
"Tobias, why does my chest hurt?" Her voice is soft, so quiet I can barely hear the confusion in it. "You got shot, but you're going to be okay." I say this like it's a fact, but I really don't know if she'll be okay.
After that we stay silent, and I make sure I keep lots of pressure on her chest. I don't know if she'll be alright because that shot may have been fatal, but I do know that I won't let her die without a fight, and she won't either.
