Jasper: Where are you today?
Ty: Suspended until Thursday.
Jasper: Stan too?
Ty: Yep. Look after Brooke for him.
Jasper: ‘course. Guess I’ll see you Thursday.
Tyler lies in bed staring up at the ceiling, there is not much else for him to do. He hates to admit it but he’s disappointed that today he won’t be at school, he won’t get to see Jasper. But, he can also use this time to his advantage. Around midday, he get’s in his car, and doesn’t look back, forgetting that he probably won’t enjoy what he finds at the end of his little road trip after bailing out the night before.

“It’s best if I stay away from him.” Brooke tells Jasper.
The two are sitting at the base of a tree, enjoying the sun for once during their lunch break. Jasper can’t believe he is hearing this, Brooke has adored Stan for years, and now all of a sudden she’s willing to give up on him? Only after he has started spending most of his free time with her and defending her infront of at least half the school?
“For who? You’ll both be heartbroken.”
Brooke laughs at this, because she knows it’s not true. There is no way Stan will walk away from this with a single emotional scar, and she will just go back to normal. No morw phone calls at night, no more hugs in the hall. No more coffees before school. No more stan. Just how things used to be, just how things should be. “He’ll be fine, it’ll take him half a day at most to get over it.”
“It’ll take him longer than that. And what about you?”
Brooke sighs, Jasper is trying to help, but there is no point, her mind is made up on the matter. “Look, it’s my fault, okay? He got involved because of me, he got hurt because of me. I should stay away from him, it’s best for everyone”
Jasper can’t help but feel mad about what Brooke is saying, she is the one who was attacked, it’s not her fault, it’s the bastards that thought it was okay to lay a finger on her.
“He defended you because he cares about you.”
“He felt an obligation because he has a reputation, he felt defensive because his best friend was about the get hurt. He defended me to look like a hero alongside Ty.” It pains her to say it, but it is the only explanation that makes sense. He wouldn't risk getting hurt, or Ty getting hurt for her.
“You can’t really believe that. You can't honestly think so low of him.”
Brooke looks Jasper directly in the eye, “I do.” She says before getting up and walking away.
Jasper let’s his face drop to his hands, how can she think that way? Even though Jasper and Stan have never personally spoken about the topic, it was something that is obvious to everyone; those two adore each other. Jasper can’t sit by and let them fall apart. Especially after Ty’s text telling him to look after her; obviously she means more to Stan than she is willing to accept, but she won’t listen. Jasper just hopes that Stan will be willing to fight for it enough that Brooke will see the truth before she makes the mistake of letting go.

Stan waits at the school gates from three o’clock until four thirty, when he is forced to accept that he missed Brooke on her way out. He walks back to her house at twice the speed he would usually travel, but when he knocks on the door, there is no response. Not even the sound of her siblings running around after each other inside.
