That's what sacrifice is-beauty and tragedy. It's pain and suffering for something or someone you love.
M. Leighton, The Empty Jar
"Happy birthday, Akashi-sama." I shout with others.
"What is all this?" he asks through gritted teeth.
"Your pre-birthday celebration." I reply instantly.
"But his birthday is in December. It's March!" One of his teammates exclaims, bemused.
"So what? Isn't it why it's called 'pre' birthday celebration?" I say, giving my best innocent smile.
"She's right. Besides, look at all those food," another one, who looks more like a gorilla and probably called too, nudges his teammates. His eyes sparkling, locked on the food cart.
"I know, right?" I say encouragingly. "Besides, who wouldn't want some good food after a long practice session?" The guys have already dropped their basketballs and huddled around the cake.
"Come on, guys! Practice is over for the day. Let us enjoy Akashi-sama's pre-birthday!" I yell, throwing my fist in the air in victory.
-
"You shouldn't have," Akashi hisses, his entire body shaking in rage. "You shouldn't have dared!"
"Dared what?" I ask innocently.
"Enya," he utters my name with venom on his tongue.
"I-I'm-" I mumble. "I didn't mean it that way. You know it, don't you?"
"Of course I do." he replies in a disgusted voice. He stares at me. His eyes burning with rage, burning me along with his irises.
"So you think I did that because it's your mother's death anniversary?" I yell as he walks away from me.
Akashi Seijuro doesn't look back. Nor does he bark back at me. I know how much today means to him. I know exactly what I did. Maybe he doesn't want to give me the pleasure of seeing his pained expression. Or maybe he's too occupied planning my misery to throw one last glance at his back.
Either way, it doesn't matter. What matters is whatever his thoughts currently are, they are of me.
