Red lights flashed. On, off, on and off. The hallways glowed eerily in the dim lighting. Alarms beeped throughout the compound as people hid in the rooms where they worked. They kept making loud, horrid noise as a man walked into lab 17.
“Dr. Simons! You’re finally here! Do you know what is going on? We were getting nervous.” The frantic scientist spoke, scratching his neck and pushing up his glasses. They were very large and took up most of the man’s face. Thinking of an answer that wouldn’t scare him. I turned and looked at the room. There were glass vials everywhere from the experiments and this was only one of the DNA labs. Everyone went about their business but had turned their heads slightly toward me. I decided on the truth, part of it anyways.
“One of the subjects has escaped.” Dr. Simons stated calmly. He knew that in order to keep the others from panicking he had to look relaxed and collected. As long as they didn’t know which experiment was missing they might be calm. No one knew Dr. Simons well enough to sense the inner turmoil inside of him. He wanted to scream. A vein bulged in his neck. He wanted to push every thing from the shelves and destroy the whole facility. Ever the loner he usually stayed away from the other workers. This meant though that I had no one to vent to. How could it have slipped his mind to lock the door? It was his easiest job and he had been doing it for years. Dr. Simons thought about this as he leaned against a table. He started to picture what his boss was going to do to him after this and sighed.
“Oh my… Do you know where it is?”
“No Dr. Harrison but we will soon enough.” The system works. There is nothing to worry about, Dr. Simons thought reassuring himself as he pulled out his tracker and pressed the small blue button. A single white dot started shining on the screen.
His feet echoed on the too-clean tile floor. Flop…flop…flop. Experiment 253 wiped one of his scaly hands through his messy blonde hair. When he looked at his fingers he saw that there were thin strands on them. He had to get away from this place. He needed water… soon. 253 sprinted around the corner and stopped in his tracks. Frozen with the fear that now coursed through his veins, he tried to take a step. His legs wouldn’t respond. There was a tingling sensation running up and down his spine. His mouth felt like it was glued shut and knew what being terrified truly was.
The pounding of boots shook the floor. He tried to move again, tears forming in his eyes. The noise got louder. He had gotten so close. The door was right at the end of the hallway. 253 shuddered and the last thing he was able to think was ‘Help me’ and then the world went dark.
The white light on the screen flashed out and Dr. Simons smiled.
