Louis and I walk through the doors that lead into Starbucks. I take off my sunglasses and drop them into my bag. We get some stares, from him being famous and from my very short hair, probably knowing that I have cancer. We walk up to the counter, ready to order. He's ordering his drink, which is a caramel frappe with extra whipped cream. I order mine, a vanilla bean frappe. We walk to an empty table and sit down.
"So, what's your story, Skylar?" Louis asks me, taking a sip of his drink through the green straw.
"Well, I was diagnosed at fourte-" I start to say, before being interrupted by him.
"No, I mean your real story." He says with a smile, his eyes twinkling.
I look up at him, shyly and smile. I take another sip from my coffee before starting over. "My name is Skylar Grace Anderson. I am seventeen and I have leukemia, I was diagnosed at fourteen. I never really get out of the hospital much, so I don't have many friends. I have about three or four."
"Lovely. I'm Louis William Tomlinson, I'm twenty years old. I'm really crazy. I'm in a band, called One Direction..those girls earlier are fans. So yeah, it gets a bit fuming. You'd love my band, they're so different, like you!", He says, with a laugh. He must have seen my face drop a bit because he gently took my cheek in his hand and looked at me with wistful eyes,"I didn't mean it in a bad way, love. You're different. In a good way, don't worry." He says with a smile, removing his hand from my cheek. I feel a sudden whish of coldness or something right then.
I sip the last of my drink and toss the plastic cup into the recycle bin. Louis and I continue talking for a few hours, getting to know each other, sharing secrets, telling jokes. The Starbucks employee tells us it's time to close, which is a nice way of kicking us out. He drives back to the hospital where I stay at, almost like taking me home but the hospital isn't home, I miss home home.
"Thanks for driving me back here, Louis. And also for the fun day, though I'm sure you'd rather done something else."
"Nope," he says, popping the "p", "I'd much rather spend an entire day with a gorgeous girl like yourself."
We drive up to the hospital and stop in the parking lot to have him ask for my number. Blushing, I hand him my phone and he hands me his. I type in my name with a smiley face next to it along with my phone number. I hand it back to him, to have my phone passed back to me. I see that he put a peace sign symbol next to his name, I smile at it.
"Shall we get you back in? I"m sure they're looking for you." He calls to me, shutting his door and running over to my side to open it for me. I giggle, stepping out. He shuts it behind me and locks the car. He grabs my hand and interlocks our fingers together. I smile and blush at the same time, longing for someone other than my mother to hold me hand. Louis's hand is so soft and delicate at the touch. I feel so safe when I'm touching him somehow.
We take the elevator up to my hospital room, seeing Dr. Raush in the hallway when we arrive on floor four.
"Skylar! Where were you?! We were about to file a missing report!" Dr. Raush says, throwing his hands into the hair. I hear Louis snicker and I nudge him.
"Well, I was kind of out today with my friend, Louis." I cock my head towards Louis and he smiles and gives a small wave.
"We must get you to bed ASAP, we have to hook you up to your IV before you go to sleep, remember?" Dr. Raush says and I nod in agreement. Dr. Raush walks into my room to get my IV ready. I turn to Louis and give him a hug, my arms around his neck. He wraps his arms around my waist and holds me there, feeling complete. I look up into his eyes, to see him looking at me, his eyes sparkling.
"Thank you so much for letting me steal you from all your plans today, love." Louis says with a sly smile, his eyelids beginning to look like they're getting heavy.
"I should be thanking you, but you're welcome." I say, getting lost in his eyes. We stare at each other for a few more moments before he leans into me, giving me to sweetest kiss I've ever received in my entire life. I felt sparks fly. If I could save this moment forever, I would.
