The trap snapped shut and I waited for the howl. The eventual howl of a vampire giving up on its life-like death.
But the howl never came.
Anticipation filled my heart. The vampire could have been killed from the surprise of the trap, or it could have killed itself-but no. That had never happened. Not for me. My dad had once had a vampire who'd been resistant to the trap, he used, similar to the trap I used. What if it had a fatal flaw I wasn't aware of?
Dread filled me. You can't kill something thats already dead. But you can decapitate it. You can make sure it won't come together again, and if it did it would be in very small pieces.
I took a tentative step forward and then another. I strode to the trap, aware that was I was doing was very foolish, and very dangerous. But I liked to meet death head on and stare it in the eye.The vampire was crouched, hunched over the trap. A few feet away was a vial of blood, the bait I used to draw the vampire towards the trap. The vampire looked up at me and smiled. Adrenaline and fear coursed through my veins. The trap was similar to a bear trap, snaring the vampires foot. The trap was made out of silver, covered in salt water. The shock combined with the silver was enough to knock a vampire out, and the salt water to make him stay knocked out. But he wasn't knocked out, no his vivid red eyes left no doubt of his date. He was angry with me, for at least one obvious reason.
"That hurt." The vampire said in a voice that sent shivers up my back. "How can you a mortal girl, not even a man, hurt me? What is it about you that makes you different?"
I stood still, shivers running up and down my back. This vampire - he was the one in charge. The predator. We both knew it.
"Set me free and I'll let you live - a little while longer. Pain is coming to you and if you unlock this trap you can delay the pain, even if only for a while."
I gasped. To set him free would be to go near him, an alive vampire. My father always had one rule, never to be broken. And he never broke it, not until the day he did. If a vampire was conscious, never go near it, even if it says it won't bite you. They always lie those vampires who are alive, no matter what they say, no matter what they promise. Never trust a vampire, especially not with your life.
"Are you coming or not?" He snapped impatiently.
I stared at him. It was all I could do. I couldn't walk away, he'd probably find me. Nor could I free him, that would be unwise. Very unwise.
"I swear, you humans are so dumb. If you undo me, I will not bite you and get away from here."
I nodded and moved closer. He stood so I could undo the trap. I moved to crouch, in a defensive stance, and I undid the trap partly. The vampire just stared at me hungrily. I undid the trap fully, and the vampire lunged down as I expected. I elbowed him in the stomach and moved to higher ground. The vampire watched me warily, eyeing the wooden dagger in my hands.
"You are cleverer than most petty mortals. You deserve to live a little while longer. But you trapped me and I never forgive, I never forget. I'll be coming for you."
The vampire ran away, blood lying forgotten. I stared at my hands, marred with scratches and encounters I had been lucky to escape. But this left no physical scar, but would scare me more than any physical or mortal wound could.
I collected the trap, and blood. It was rare blood, AB, stuff that apparently tasted like chocolate to vampires, it was supposed to be their favourite blood type.
I packed it, and turned around and walked to my van. It was battered, but in the back there was a cage strong enough to hold a vampire at full strength. There were hooks and cupboards decorating the walls of the van, walls that had been reinforced with iron, and that I sprayed repeatedly with salt water to keep out vampires. The front part of the van was seperated out from the back, but still was reinforced with iron, with the front seats swivelled to form a bed that I usually used on a job. Most days I had to camp in my van, it was safer than sleeping out at least. And it wasn't too bad, not too uncomfortable at least. It was better than sleeping outside and becoming a vampire, or vampire food.
I drove down the derelict country lane, glad I customised the van to be 4 wheel drive. I checked the map. The next vampire trap was about an hour away. It was already 6, so I planned to check the trap, then find a small town somewhere. Usually I slept in my van, but sometimes I slept in motels or bed and breakfast when I could find them. Money wasn't a massive problem for me; no, staying safe and not being bitten was the main problem I had to deal with.
I reached the trap at 7:10. Traffic was heavier than usual, but even allowing so, the journey should only have taken an hour. I moved silently through the forest, having left my van back at the dilapidated road, that didn't even deserve to be called a path.
It started to pour down with rain, accentuating the miserable mood I was in, but I continued on, not even pausing to put the hood of my rain coat up. The sooner this business was over and done with, the sooner I could go somewhere nice and sunny, maybe in America, or the continent. Britain was known for its rain, and I liked the sun and warm beaches. Maybe Spain, or the south of France.
