The wind blew trough my hair and I could hear the sounds of the ocean waves. It would all be gone soon, the beach, high school, everything. I was going to the city for college. I was going to leave my family to go to college with my best friend. "Kate! What are you still doing out here. The sun is setting." I looked behind me and at the top of the hill stood Devan, my best friend. He was tall, at least a head taller than me. He had messy brown hair and the most beautiful blue eyes. I don't know where I would be without him.
"It's the best part of the day." He walked down the hill and sat down next to me. "Yeah, it really is." He stared off into the sunset. I leaned my head on his shoulder. "We should head back to dinner soon." I looked up at him. "I know." I stood up and grabbed my shoes. "Let's go. I'll race you." I started running towards my house. "You won't win." He was already ahead of me. We walked inside. "Mom, are you in the kitchen." I put my shoes down at the front door. "Kate. Is Devan staying for dinner?" I walked into the kitchen, Devan behind me. "Yeah." I looked over at my little brothers. They were twins, Evan and Ethan. "Whats up?" I sat down next to them. "We're playing battleship. E6." I smiled and went into the living room with Devan. "Are you ready for prom tomorrow night?"
I sat down on the recliner beside him. He chuckled, " Speaking of prom, Annie asked me." I sat up straight. "Oh. What did you say?" He looked down at his hands. "I said yes. I mean she's liked me all year and I like her so I went for it." I nodded slowly and looked down at my hands. "Good for you." I looked back up and gave him a smile. "Let's go eat." I stood up and walked to the dining room with Devan behind me.
The dinner was short and quiet. The twins tried not to say anything to each other because of the game. I felt a little awkward knowing that I had to get a new person to go to prom with me. "So how was school Kate, Devan?" I put my fork down. "It was the same as every other day. We went to classes and ate lunch. Same old." She sighed. "I was just trying to make conversation Kate." I nodded and picked up my fork. "Well, Devan you should get home." He looked over at me. "Yeah. I really should get going." I nodded and picked up our plates and walked him to the door.
"Sorry about tonight's dinner." He shook his head. "It was fine. Thank you." I gave him a hug goodbye and watched him walk to his house. I shut the door and went to the kitchen to wash the dishes. "Kate, can you help me beat Evan on battleship? He's really hard to beat." I laughed. "I can't help you. You've got to do it yourself." I put the plates away and headed upstairs. I washed my face and put my hair in a side braid. I went to my room and changed into pjs and went to bed.
The next morning I woke up early to meet up with Devan. I changed into a black skirt with a beige tank top on tucked in. I put some sandals on and grabbed my bag. I fixed my side braid and went outside. "Hey!" I saw Devan standing on the hill again. He looked back at me, that's when I noticed someone else, Annie. I walked over to him. "Hey, Annie." I moved my bangs out of my face. She smiled. "It's so nice to finally meet you." She leaned up against Devan. "You too." I looked down at the ground.
"I thought you guys could go dress shopping." He backed away from Annie. I smiled. "It would be nice to have a girls opinion for once." She laughed. "That sounds awesome." He chuckled, "Let's go." He grabbed Annie's hand and went in front of me. He got inside his car and Annie got in the passenger side. I got in the back. It was a silent drive no one could find anything to talk about. "We're here." I got out of the car faster than you can say apple. "Okay well Kate and Annie I'll meet you at the food court." He gave Annie a kiss and left.
I walked ahead of Annie. We walked into a store that had a lot of dresses. "What color do you want?" Annie was looking at the dresses as we passed. "I think I want like a dark purple or red." She looked around the store. "Kate, what about this one?" I walked over to her. It was a short knee length purple dress. The torso was tight and the skirt was poofy. "It's beautiful." She smiled. "Try it on." She took it off the rack and handed it to me. "Then we'll get my dress." I smiled and went back to the dressing rooms. I put it on and it looked perfect. I changed into my normal clothes and walked out. "I'm getting it." She nodded and we went to look for her dress. "I want this one." She grabbed a long light pink dress. It had a mermaid tail skirt and a tight torso.
We went to check out and met Devan at the food court. He had already gotten himself something. "Finally. I've been sitting here for like five minutes already." We laughed and joined him. "I got some fries for you." I smiled. I was ready to grab them when he handed them to Annie. She smiled. "Thank you." She leaned over and kissed him. I loved fries, and he knew that. "I should get home." I grabbed my bag and got up. "How I drove you here." I pushed my chair in. "Taxi." I walked away. I went outside and called a taxi.
An hour later I was still waiting. "Kate why are you sitting out here?" I looked up and saw Caleb. "I'm just waiting for a taxi." He smiled and walked towards me. "Actually I was trying to talk to you. I wanted to know if you would go to prom with me?" I stood up from the bench. "I would love to. And if you wouldn't mind could you give me a ride home. He chuckled, "Of course." He grabbed my hand and we went to his car.
