The bell rings and I rush outside my last period class in classroom 1-A, waiting for Haruhi. I've been excited about the picnic the whole day.
I really tried to look decent today. I showered in the morning, brushed my hair very carefully, and even stole some of my older sister's mango perfume. I sprayed it only once but it's way stronger than I thought. The twins said I smelt like their family orchards. Haruhi didn't notice to my dismay.
I pull out lip-gloss from my bag and carefully apply it, trying not to overdo it. I look around the hallways and on my left I see Haruhi waving with a big smile on her face. I put away the lip gloss, removed the excess, and waved back.
"Are you ready for the picnic, (y/n)?" Haruhi and I start walking down the hallway toward the courtyard.
"Very. I've been looking forward to it all day." I pull out my halfway done math homework for tonight. It looks like a foreign language. The teacher did not explain it well at all.
"(y/n) is that your math homework? What are you learning?' She grabs the paper from your hand and examines it. "Slopes and Linear equations, right?"
"Right. Can you help me with it? Mrs. Johnson is not someone to explain things thoroughly."
"Sure! I'll help you when we get to the courtyard. No one will be there until around 3:45 So we'll have a bit of peace and quiet."
After walking down 2 flights of stairs, we see the open doors to the courtyard. The courtyard had perfectly even and mowed grass, pristine cobblestone pathways with large trees surrounding them, and an extravagant fountain in the middle of it all.
I stopped in the doorway, slackjawed in awe. The best garden I ever had was a dead cactus. Too much water.
"It's beautiful, isn't it? Here," Haruhi takes my hand and leads me down one of the paths, "I have a spot where I like to study. I've never seen anyone else there so it's very peaceful and serene."
Haruhi stops at a bench overlooking a small koi fish pond. Sunlight beamed through the trees around the pond. We sit on the bench, Haruhi pulls out a sheet of graph paper, I just gaze at the large koi fish swimming freely around the pond. Haruhi rummages through her bag and pulls out a brown paper bag.
"Here, try this." She hands me the bag.
"Woah, woah, woah there missy. I'm not supposed to give in to peer pressure." I grab the bag and drop it in her lap. "I promised my parents I would say NO to drugs." I lift my head up high and face away from her (sarcasm).
"It's not drugs, idiot." She opens the bag and shows the small brown pellets inside. "It's koi food. I come here most days after school to do homework so I figured it'd be fun to feed them every once and a while."
"Really? It'd be so nice to come here every day. Like you said, it's just peaceful and a great atmosphere." I reach my hand into the bag, grab a handful, and throw it into the pond. She does the same. The few koi dash over and start to nibble at them.
We both go silent as we watch the fish go for the bobbing pellets. I spot a frog sitting dormant on a rock at the edge of the pond and water skitters speeding across the surface of the water. I begin to zone out watching a whole new world inside of mine unfold that I had never known about.
After a minute or two of watching the animals, Haruhi suddenly rests her head on my shoulder. I tense up and glance at Haruhi. Her soft hair falling down my back, her eyes closed.
Why is she doing this?! What What What What What. It's not that I don't like it. It's just...I didn't think she felt the same way. Wait, does she? Should I ask? It could jeopardize our whole friendship. Maybe It'll be fine if I ask her instead of confessing myself. I clear my throat.
"H-Haruhi?"
"Yeah?" She responds a little groggy.
"Do you, uhm...do you...like me?"
"What do you mean?" She slowly lifts her head to look at me at eye level. She rubs her eyes.
I immediately begin to fidget with my hands, squeezing my thumb. "I know this is sudden, but I just sorta thought that...maybe you...ya know..." I shift my eyes to the fish, gliding through the glistening water, trying to distract myself from the MOST AWKWARD SITUATION IN MY LIFE. I glance back at her and see her eyes widen. She must've realized what I said.
"(y/n) I-"
"WHERE IS MY DAUGHTER?!?" Haruhi is interrupted by Tamaki who comes sprinting from the path. He slows down, panting with his hands on his knees. He looks up.
"Haruhi! The picnic is starting right now! Girls are already requesting you! Come out here and get changed!"
Haruhi looks somewhat disappointed but gathers her things and stands up anyway.
"Alright..." Haruhi glances at me before jogging down the path with Tamaki.
The koi fish scurry to the edges of the pond, hidden by plants and fallen leaves.
