THE SECRET SPOKEN.
Sandra Point of Veiw:
I wake with a constant ringing beside my bed. I try to bang it quiet, only hitting the bell, feeling kind of stupid. When I finally get the alarm to stop, another warning sirened for me to get moving.
"Sandra, are you up!"My mother calls from far away. I considered she was down stairs since she trailed off.Well she was right to call me, today was a school day, but a special day.Today was that October 31, Halloween day. The only day where we can dress up and act like complete fools without adults scrunching up their face; tease kids under their breath to the nearest person around them. With all the excitement of my favorite holiday surging through me. I went to my closet, searching for something normal but a halloween vibe hanging from it.
"Sandra are you going to be late for school again?" My mother called once again. I quickly slipped on my orange tank top and paired it with my favorite black poofy pants. Then I added an artist hat and a crochet cover up. I ran down downstairs ready to swing the door open and say hello eight hours in a cold building. But as soon as I slid my stretchy flats on, my mom spoke up.
" Sandra wait!" I walked back into a slit in our wall where the kitchen was located.
"Yes mother?" I asked with all the annoyance in my voice.
"Sweety, I need something from my shop." I should have known. Each year our neighborhood has this community festival in the middle of November, and each year my mother make this huge pot of soup available for anyone hungry for a real meal. But it was soo wierd for her to ask me, she's a cook with her own cafe, so she has assistance to pick up items for her. So my ears are open to any secret ingredient.
"Ask me anything." I said. She was twirling her stew around like it was the most enjoyable thing in the world. Even as she started talking, it was like I wasnt even there.
"Go to The Crop, and in my shop, go down in the basement and get something called ...." She paused, even putting down her wooden spoon. She walked away from the pot coming closer to me. We were the same height, about, she just had an inch difference. I could see her dark circles placed under her brown eyes, showing how tired she really was. But still I could see her caring smile in her eyes even as her lips were stern and straight.
"Sandra can I trust you to keep a secret?" My mom asked touching my shoulders with a comforting you can do it feel to it.
"Of course, I 'm your daughter." And of course I was lying, my finger were crossed the whole time. I would tell one person, the most important person, my best friend Damion. My mother wouldnt permit him from knowing this so important secret.
" Look for something called Hokbin Breath." It didnt sound that important, just a simple name that probably isnt even real. So I shook my head so my mom knew that I understand, and I was even play along and go to her shop and find that stuff.
"I understand, but Im obviously a late mess, so can I get to school."
My mom nodded her head in approval straigtening her invisible cringles on her apron. I faced the door and had in hand the knob, turning it when my mother hand came down on mine.
"Be careful." She said
"Im a tenth grader, I survived this long , mom." I smiled a little, thinking about the time when she used to hold my hand to cross the crowded road to her cafe after school in elementary.
"No Sandra, I tried to keep you out of the loop for so long, but now you know. And if you know, then they'll take you and ...and..." Her breaths became audible, and I understood. Whatever she was so afraid of would kill me and whoever I tell. But I cant live my life afraid of what ifs and if I didnt. Im not my mom, and Im not going to start. I put my arms around my mom and I stretched my neck a little to reached her ear and said, " Im not afraid." And I drew a smiling, while wishing I didnt wake up so late so this could happen earlier. So Damion and I could walk together, and I could tell him all what happened, and how awkward my mom was acting.
