"Nicki! Come down! Food's ready babe."
Onika leaned farther out of her east side window to get a better look at the new neighbors across the street. So far she could only see a couple of couches and a very large moving truck. After angling her head this way and that, she gave up and bounded down the steps of her two-story home for lunch.
"Mommy the new people are here." She announced as she raced into the kitchen. There was a familiar scent in the air. Onika stood on her tippy-toes and peered over the counter to find a heaping plate of chocolate chip cookies.
Maybe she won't notice if I take one. She thought to herself.
"I saw." Carol answered softly. "Maybe we can go introduce ourselves once they get settled in."
When she didn't hear an answer from her normally loquacious seven year old, Carol whipped around to find two whole cookies shoved in her mouth. Onika stopped chewing and gasped, not expecting to have been caught.
"Tanya Maraj!"
Onika looked sheepish. "Sorry." She offered quietly. Cookie crumbs spewed from her lips and she looked down at them before hesitantly glancing back at Carol.
"Ugh." She threw her hands up.
"What's the problem?" Robert chuckled. He turned around in his seat.
"Your daughter has no self control."
Onika frowned. She wasn't sure what that meant but it upset her nonetheless. She crossed her arms and stomped over to her father, climbing onto his lap. He had already started eating his lunch-a sub sandwich, fried plantains, and a pickle on the side.
"Is this the food?" She shoved two plantains in her mouth as she spoke.
Just as she went for the third Robert grabbed her arm. "Yes. Mine." Onika offered another apologetic look. "Why don't you go ask mom to fix your-"
Carol set down a small pink plate off to the side of her husbands before he could finish his sentence. Pink was Onika's "very most favorite" color and she refused to eat from any of the other dishware in the house. Because of this, she also had a pink bowl and pink cup to match.
Onika wasted no time tearing into the food on her plate. She was a small girl, but she ate as much as someone twice her age. Her head didn't bob up until Carol revealed another tidbit of information.
"They have a daughter. Oh look she's so cute!" Onika snapped to attention. "She looks about your age Tanya. Maybe you two can play sometime."
"Why not now?" She mumbled with her mouth full. Onika snatched her fathers cup to take a big sip before hopping off his lap to race outside. "I'll stay where you can see!"
