II Aiden's POV II
I walked my way down the hallway, my shirt was soaked with my sweat. I was restless and couldn't find a better solution than tiring myself in the gym. It was currently 01:00 am. I gulped down water and started to strut my way back towards my room to shower and change.
My room was just one room down Emily's, so I had to pass by her room to enter mine. I walked slowly past her door to pick up any sound that may alert me whether she was in danger. I pressed my ears to the door as I heard soft muffled...sobs?
I knocked on the door to check on her. "Emily!" I called out, "Open the door!". The sobs ceased and I heard the shuffling of sheets. Her footsteps heavy and loud. She came to the door but didn't open it. I saw her shadow moving from under the door. I waited for a few seconds but she didn't open the door or say anything. I knocked again.
"What do you want?" she croaked.
"Just open the damn door or shall I break it open?"
She stood still for a few seconds, her breath soft and slow. Then I heard the door click open and Emily moved to let me in. I trudged my way into her room. Her room was bigger than mine with a closet and a small, quaint balcony. A study table sat in the corner of the room with a desk lamp on. The room was sparsely lit with dim yellow rope lights on the ceiling. To the right of the room, near the closet, was a huge bookshelves adorned with books of all sorts - thriller, fantasy, non-fiction and adventure, but no romance. I let out a low chuckle which earned me a questioning look from Emily. My eyes wandered to the most well kept series of books on the shelf - Harry Potter. I couldn't help but smile again.
"Can you just cut to the chase?" She sniffed.
"I heard you cry," I shrugged.
"I wasn't crying," she answered.
"Of course you were, don't question my hearing," I raised my eyebrows. She let out a small groan and seated her small frame onto the bed. My eyes softened and I moved forward to place a hand on her shoulder but I stopped. What's happening to me? I have never done this before. God, I swear, this girl makes me feel weird things. First she got me worried at office, and now this.
She sniffed and a tear rolled down her cheek but she quickly wiped it with the back of her hand. "Why do you care? Shouldn't you go back to the gym, where you belong?"
I sighed and shook my head. "It's my job to care," I said softly. She looked up at me, her cheeks moist with her tears. I stared down at her with the most caring expression I could manage so that she could be comfortable and spill out the beans.
"Okay," she said finally. "Today Aubrey and Jason went out to a colleague's birthday party but I didn't go because I had work to do." She groaned again, "Why didn't I go! Couldn't have I done my work on time for once?" I sat down beside her and put a hand on her shoulder squeezing it lightly. My eyes widened. Oh shit! What the actual fuck! I just tried comforting a girl; I have never even comforted a person before.
Although I felt weird, I didn't move my hand. Her hands unconsciously moved to rest on my own. I froze and my breath hitched, my arms and legs became stiff and I couldn't move. I took deep breaths to calm myself.
By then Emily regained her composure herself and continued, still not aware that her hand is on mine at her shoulder. "Just a few hours ago, Aubrey called me from the party. She said she saw Jason making out with one of the girls from our office and it was not just any girl he was snogging but it was Jessica."
I gave Emily a questioning look. Understanding, she said, "Jessica is my arch enemy. She works with us and she is a total bitch. She can do anything to move ahead, to get money. She'll do anything to get what she wants. She slept with the boss to get a promotion; how do you think she got to such a high post so early?"
Jessica...the name rang a bell. "Is she the girl who attacked me in the washroom?" I ask as I shuddered with the memory.
Emily chuckled and nodded. "Anyway, I didn't believe Aubrey first but then she sent me a picture of those two eating each other's faces. It broke me. I never thought Jason would ever do this to me. I think it was Jessica who did this to get back at me. It was Jessica who provoked Jason into doing so but that does not mean I will forgive him. She hates me for being rich and she hates me for being our boss' favourite. That's not fair, you can't hate me for being amazing."
I smile slightly at her last remark. Fresh new tear rolled down her cheek. "I thought... I thought everything will be perfect again when Jason kissed me up on the terrace." I could see she was trying hard to control her tears but she failed miserably.
I moved my hand from her shoulder and rubbed small circles on her back as she continued crying. She leaned into my shoulder and started crying softly there. I stiffened under her touch as her tears soaked my now dry shirt. My hand moved, without my command, to embrace her and comfort her.
Emily now seemed to realise the intimate position we were in and quickly moved aside, wiping her tears. She cleared her throat as a cue for me to get going. I gently for off the bed and headed towards the door. I opened the door with a small click.
Just as I was going to move out, I turned around and said softly, "If you need me, I'll be in your room. Your dad texted me that he will be calling to speak to you tomorrow and I want you to tell him everything. If you don't, then I'll tell him for you."
She didn't move or say anything, just sniffed. I gently shut the door behind me and proceeded to my room. I felt slightly dazed; what I did in there, I had never done before. This girl did weird things to me. I sigh and fall like a sack onto my bed, completely forgetting to shower. Tomorrow was going to be a long day.
