Primus Hartford regarded the man standing before her. He had a long and distinguished career within the Order, but as of late, she wondered whether the man was thinking with the brain the divine had bestowed upon him, or was his ego driving him.
Tasked with finding and securing the 200-odd children cast adrift after the Davions discovered their 'project', she ordered them and the entire research arm moved to the Periphery world of Banori, home of one of the most advanced Castle Brians still in functioning order. However, word of this move was leaked, somehow, and before the Davions could pounce, the children were bundled off to live with agents and allies of the Order.
That was nearly 20 years ago.
Now, just tracking down most of these special children was becoming more monumentous a task then finding a new First Lord. And worse still, three of those kids were now in command of a merc unit working on a Lyran Commonwealth world. Her agents had intercepted most of the details their commander, a young man of barely 20 years, named Alex Carlson by his adoptive parents, tried to send to each of the Great Houses. Only the report meant for MIIO managed to make it through, but MIIO already knew of this project, and the information was a mirror of this knowledge.
After dispatching the man before her, with enough forces to drop even a seasoned merc outfit, like the ELH, here he stood before her, practically in chains. Had it not been for a timely communication intercept by Acolyte Van Mullen, Precentor Martial Jamison would surely be in MIIO's less than loving care, enduring whatever tortures and devices the Davions had concocted to force truth from his lips.
"These children are indeed a remarkable lot, no Precentor?"
Relieved he still held his former rank, Jamison let out his held breath in a slow sigh.
"Remarkable barely begins to cover the scope of their abilities. And the one named 'Carlson', with his ability to sway the minds of those around him with but a look or word, is truly horrifying."
"But, Precentor, this is exactly why they were created. Granted, certain limits should have been imposed upon Dr. Waverly to prevent her from creating genetic monsters as opposed to the obedient soldiers we wanted. Still, with you standing before me, and a battalion of Star League mechs lost to the ELH for the time being, I'm at odds as to what to do with you."
Jamison stiffened.
"By your grace, Primus. Allow me to redeem myself in the eyes of our Blessed Order."
"You know Command Colonel Atrius Matthews, yes?" Jamison nodded.
"He's been working alongside of the Capellans against the Davions, yes? Commander of the 3rd?"
"Correct."
"What of him? I am only passingly familiar with him and his troupe."
"I've sent him orders to deal with Carlson and his meddlesome unit. Surely his cutthroat tactics should bear results where your more, 'traditional' approach failed, no?"
Not missing a beat, Jamison smiled inwardly, thinking carefully before uttering his reply.
"At the risk of dragging our Order into a brief skirmish with Tharkad, I wish him all the best." He concluded with a slight sneer.
