Mae's POV
When I get to homeroom, I take a seat and look over at Ella.
"Hey. Are you okay?" I ask her.
She looks at me with sad eyes. "How could I be? Nicky knows I like him now. I trusted Dawn and she totally blew it."
"I'm really sorry Ella. I should have told you about Dawn. She's not really good at keeping secrets."
"Figures." Just before the bell rings, Nicky, Ricky, and Dicky walk in and take their seats.
"Where's Dawn?" I ask Ricky.
"I have no idea."
"Hey Mae can we talk?" Dicky asks.
"Not now. We're in home room," I say.
"What are you talking about? We're at home?" He says.
I just roll my eyes. The morning announcements come on.
"Good morning students of South Denver Middle School. This is your principal-WHAT?......okay......fine....."
His voice goes down a little and there's some background voice.
"Okay students. Change of plans. This morning announcement will be given by a fellow student. Here she is."
There's a screech and a girl's voice comes on.
"Good morning fellow peers. This is Dawn Harper with the morning announcement for today. For lunch we're having chicken nuggets with a side of baby taters and your choice of slushy. Remember to get either a milk or juice and a fresh fruit or vegetable."
The principal goes back on. "Thanks you Dawn, now-"
"Wait I'm not done yet. Just one more thing."
"Dawn!-"
"Hello again peers! This is Dawn. Again. And I have something to say to my friend. Ella, I'm sorry for telling Mae and my brothers you have a thing for Nicky. I mean, I don't know why you like him. He's super gross and weird and he wet the bed till he was 12 but I should have respected you and not have told anyone. I hope you can forgive me."
I look over at Ella and her eyes are wide open. Nicky's face is beet red and I notice a few kids chuckling. I think Dawn made this worse.
