IRIS COULD NOT PRY HER EYES AWAY FROM THE DARK RED BLOOD COVERING AND STAINING THE HARDWOOD FLOOR, THE AIR SLOWLY ESCAPING HER LUNGS AS SHE SOBBED AND HYPERVENTILATED. DESPITE ONLY BEING THIRTEEN, SHE UNDERSTOOD FAIRLY WELL WHAT THE SLASHED THROATS AND NON-BREATHING PARENTS ON THE FLOOR MEANT. THERE WAS NOTHING THAT SHE COULD DO, KNOWING EVEN AT HER YOUNG AGE THAT TRYING TO SAVE HER PARENTS WOULD DO NOTHING, IT WAS TOO LATE. THE FATAL WOUNDS ON THEIR BODIES WERE ENOUGH TO KILL THEM RIGHT ON THE SPOT.
THE SHOPPING BAGS ON HER SHOULDER NOW HUNG LIMPLY, ALL WHILE THE OTHER CHILD COULD BE HEARD SOBBING FROM BEHIND HER. JACKSON, THE OTHER CHILD, SHAKILY PULLED OUT HIS PHONE AND DIALED 911. NOT LOOKING AWAY UNTIL A FRAGILE GIRL FELL INTO HIS ARMS AS THEY FELL TO THE GROUND. THAT WAS WHEN THEY KNEW THAT IRIS WAS ALONE IN A WORLD THEY WEREN'T READY TO ACCEPT. HE WAS THE ONLY ONE THERE FOR HER AT THAT MOMENT AND ALL HE COULD DO WAS HOLD HER AS THEY SOBBED LOUDLY. FROM THAT POINT ON, HE KNEW HE HAD TO PROTECT HER FROM EVERYTHING AND EVERYONE. NOTHING WOULD EVER CHANGE THAT.

Iris sighed deeply and then gulped down a large amount of the unknown alcohol in her cup. She sat on her living room couch next to her boyfriend downing drink after drink surrounded by her brother and friends. Tomorrow
was the first day of sophomore year and she was so not ready for another school year. Jackson, her brother, sat in the corner kissing his beautiful girlfriend and Iris' only best friend who was a girl, Lydia Martin. She smiled at Danny, her brothers best friend, who sat alone barely staying awake. Her eyes traveled to her gorgeous boyfriend. He sat there looking down at her admiring what was his. Geo was a huge player, a womanizer, before he fell in love with the carefree dirty blonde. She had taught him what it was like to care for someone so much that you would be willing to die for them.
As she snuggled farther into her boyfriend her phone began to ring. She groaned getting up and walking into the kitchen. She checked the caller I.D. and saw it read Stiles Stilinski. Her best friend ever since the first day of Kindergarten. Him, Scott, and her had become inseparable and they were there for her through everything. Of course, they could never compare to her brother and best friend, Jackson, but they sure were close. "Yes, Stiles" she said as politely as possible annoyed for making her get up from her comfortable position. "I just called to see if you were doing okay" he said sincerely. She sighed knowing where he was coming from. Tomorrow would be the anniversary of the worst day of her life. The day 2 years ago that changed her forever. Her parents death.
She paused and zoned out remembering the pain, fear, and trauma that came from that day. "Iris?" Stiles asked with concern after a long pause. "I'm fine." she sated wiping the tears that had formed in her bright green eyes. "You don't have to pretend. I know how it feels, to lose a parent" he said comfortingly. Iris nodded to herself knowing that Stiles mom had died as well. Stiles would never know her fear though. The same nightmare that replayed through her mind
over and over every night. Finding your parents dead at a young age but old enough to understand. "I have to go Stiles" Iris said trying her best not to break down. She quickly hung up, closed her eyes, and took a deep breath. Tomorrow, ever since the day of the death, would be the first time she would attend the first day of school. She was nervous but she had to be brave. She walked into the living room and sat back down next to her boyfriend. "Everything okay?" he asked concerned. "Everything is fine" she said trying to reassure him and also herself. She looked around and realized something. Nothing was fine, she was lying to not only everyone around her but herself. She wasn't okay. She would never be okay again. Normally, Jackson would've noticed but lately it seemed as though the inseparable pair was drifting. Which only made matters worse. They had been best friends for as long as she could remember and after everything that happened he took her in and made a promise to himself to always protect her. But recently he wasn't there for her. It seemed as though he had forgotten everything he had vowed to do. He didn't care anymore.
Everything has changed and Iris didn't know if it was good or bad but one thing she did know was that tomorrow was a fresh start. Tomorrow would be the day her parents died two years ago but this year she wouldn't cry and hide. No, this time she would walk the halls bravely. She would be a better person and forget her past. But she knew deep down the darkness would always be there no matter how hard she tried. But she had to try.
Just try.
