Fifty dollars in. I took a puff of smoke and watched as the men playing poker continued playing as light rock played softly in the back of the bar. This week had been the same as the ones before; Monday I went to work at Walmart behind the counter for 7 hours. Tuesday, I received my pay of a few dollars. Tonight, I'm wasted at the bar about a block from the apartments. At least I knew my limit. Tipsy Terry to the left was tore up, puke covering his shirt and his cigarette only inches from burning a hole in his cheap thrifty polo.
Inside, I laughed. This is my life. This has been my life for months now. Everyone in the bar knows my name, even Terry mumbled my name the few seconds he's ever conscious. Evan. I finished the Scotch I was drinking and slid the glass to the bartender, who seem to be dazing. Looking at the clock, it read 12:01 a.m. I let a sigh escape my mouth as I stood and went towards the door. The bell sounded as I took my last step out of the bar.
Rustling the keys and opening the door to my apartment, I went inside, the breeze from the air conditioner whipping in my face. I went to the bathroom and took a look in the mirror. I examined my dirty brown hair, my greasy face, and the Bob Marley tee I've been wearing this past week. I came to a conclusion that a shower would be needed... Soon.
The next day, as usual, I took the alley on the side of the apartments to Calvin's place. After jumping the fence, I went up the stairs that led to the back window of the apartment rented by Calvin in the slightly different complex than mine. Besides having roaches crawling in and out of it and crackheads hanging in the front, Sundale Apartments was exactly like Hamilton's Apartment Complex. I popped his window open and hopped inside, already grabbing a soda from his fridge. When I sat at his couch, he was playing Call of Duty Black Ops. He threw a remote at me and the day of gaming started.
