That boy snatched the ball right out of my hands, and went into my yard. When I had heard his mamma and daddy shut their door, I hit him right over the head with the palm of my hand.
"Hey!" He said as he reached for the back of his head, and dropped the ball in the proses. I swooped down, grabbed it, and looked him dead in the eye
"This is my ball ya hear, you can't just take it out of my hands, it's rude." He looked at me with a shocked face like he ain't never been hit before.
"Ruby!" The way Cason said my name sent shivers down my spine, and I knew I was about to hear it all about hit in' people especially new folk.
"You can't hit people over the head like that, he ain't one of us. You shouldn't even do it to us!" He said eyeing me
"But he grabbed the ball right out of my hands, and even I know that's rude." I looked at Nick behind me and glared at him. Why am I always getting in trouble for things I didn't start.
"It ain't matter you treat people with respect no matter what they do. Now apologize."
"Fine. Sorry." I muttered, I didn't think I should I didn't start it but I wasn't in the mood for arguing.
"Good enough, say what's your name kid?" Cason said lookin' at Nick. They probably didn't hear me and his daddy talkin'.
"My names Nick, Nick Kane. What about you guys since I already know what loud mouths is." He said with a smirk. I just huffed and crossed my arms.
"I'm Sarah louise Davis, this here is Cason our older brother." Cason gave a small wave and smiled, he had daddy's smile.
"So what do you guys play around here when it's so hot." Nick said taking his jacket off and tying it around his waist. Me, Sarah, and Cason all looked at each other.
"It's always this hot, sometimes if where lucky it drops to 40 in winter." I said trying to explain.
"Do you guys get snow?" Nick said with his jaw dropping
"It happened once when we where little." Sarah said try to think of when it happened. I remembered it me and Sarah where 'bout 6. It was Christmas Eve, and me and her ain't never seen it before. It didn't stick though, and didn't last very long.
"Where I use to live we would get one foot or more." Nick said as if it was normal for a foot of cold wet white stuff to fall from the sky.
"A whole foot!" Sarah said
"Yup, so uh what where you guys playing to get the ball up on the roof?"
"You sayin' ruff like a dog it's roof." I said remember his parents wired way of talkin'.
"What?"
"It's roof, you sayin' ruff like a dog." I said
"Just ignore her, we'd say she was adopted but she looks to much like our daddy." Cason said shaking his head
"Hey!"
"Anyway we where playin' who can throw the ball the farthest." Cason said as he grabbed the ball from me
"You want to try?" And he tossed the ball to Nick
"Yeah, But I don't know how well I'll do with this on my arm." He said has he raised his left up
"Just give it your best shot, we're amin' for the tree up against the fence." Sarah said as we all stood back to seethe what this boy had in him. He took the best pitchers throw I'd ever seen. It went so fast it made a dent in the tree. We all looked at him. He had just beat Cason.
"Oops" Nick said as he turned back to us. Our jaws reached the floor, and we had to pick them back up again.
"There is no way I'm losein' to a kid like you, no way no how." Cason said going and getting the ball throwin' it and doing over and over. Each time get worse.
"That....that was Awesome!" I said amazed " You've got to teach me!"
"I mean I could try?" He said rubbing the back of his neck.
"Y'all want somethin' to drank!" Great aunt petunia said through the screen door. Petunia came over sometimes to help daddy out with mamma and us. We all went inside to get some lemonade, we also introduced Nick to Petunia.
"Where you from Nick?" She asked
"Up north." He said after taking a big sip of lemonade.
We all finished up, but Nick got told of my aunt Petunia for havin' no manners.
She'd get ya for the littlest things. Like one time I had put my elbows on the table, and she yelled at me for havin' "no respect for table manners." Daddy would do that to, then mamma would get on to daddy bout it. Petunia is daddy's aunt, but looks more like grandma. She was shorter than Cason, and had short curly gray hair. She would always were big hats. She could yell your head off, but we still loved her she would bring the best gifs on Christmas.
"So where are we going now?" Nick asked as we walked down the side walk
"Our club house." Sarah said in a duh tone. I really wouldn't call it much of a club house. It dose have a house like thing in it, it's mostly just the run down baseball field behind the gas station.
By the time we has gotten there we where all hot and sweaty.
I looked at Nick to see his reaction to our "club house" but all I saw was smile on his face.
"This is awesome!"
