Rain patted down on Baby as Dean and I sat inside, scoping out a suspicious building for our latest job, Dean's music playing softly. Sam was back at the motel, doing more research on possible leads. I sat in the passenger seat, absentmindedly fiddling with one of the buttons on the sleeve of my flannel as I watched the rain drop on the windshield, deep in thought.
"Hey, " Dean said, startling me out of my thoughts. "Is everything OK?", he asked, concern flashing through his sharp features.
"Yeah,... Just thinking, daydreaming really. " I replied.
"About what?"
"It's just,... I feel sorry for you and Sam. You deserve a home. Somewhere you can relax and be free and feel safe. You boys never really had that. Kinda makes me glad I wasn't thrown into this life so young."
"Baby is home. She's where we grew up. She's the one constant that's been around our entire lives. She's the only home we've really had. She's full of memories. Baby's the only home we've ever really needed." Dean said, lovingly rubbing the steering wheel.
"I... I was thinking about something else too, but it's just a stupid fantasy. It's completely unrealistic." I added.
"What, Y/N? " he asked.
"Nothing, I-it's stupid." I said, looking down at my lap, avoiding eye contact.
"Tell me, please."
"I was thinking about,... About maybe us having a home in the future.... Y'know... Together... With kids and a dog and... Just a home... But, it's just a stupid thought, I-I mean we aren't even- You don't even-" I was cut off by soft, sweet lips on mine, the faint taste of whiskey lingered on the soft flesh. He pulled away and, if I didn't know any better, I'd say a soft blush warmed his freckled cheeks.
"W-what was that for?" I stuttered out, trying to compose myself and feeling my own cheeks flush warm pink.
"You didn't think I'd want that with you. You're wrong. Darlin', if I thought it was possible I would take you off in a heartbeat and we'd live the good ol' apple pie life, but you know it's not. Not for me, not in this life. So, do you think maybe me, you, Baby, Sammy and Cas could be home enough for us?" he asked.
"Of course." And with that, he threaded his worn, calloused fingers through my own and placed a gentle kiss on my lips.
And that was the night that I learned that, for a Winchester, home is family, good beer and four wheels.
