Chapter 2: The Daily Life

I wake up to the sound of my little brother Caleb crying his eyes out. He must not have slept well either. I decide to go downstairs and eat some breakfast to get myself awake. Great, my dad's making breakfast...this should be interesting. After I finish my burnt cheese biscuit and drink my slightly sour milk I start on the morning chores. You see, when you live in a poor state of the world, like me, every man is for himself. Which means almost every family in our region has their own farm to live off of. We are one of those family's. My dad has a few small jobs here and there, repairing trains, but that is it. We can't afford much, which is why I've never been outside the city of Madison, Wisconsin. I start my day by milking the cows, then collecting eggs, tending to our crops, washing the windows, helping my mother watch two year old Caleb and seven year old Grace, sewing up my dad's torn clothes, and finally eating supper. Thank goodness, moms cooking. Mmmm beef stew, my favorite. After I finish supper I decide to end my day with reading a good book. Tonight, I actually fall asleep.
