I couldn't bear the thought of being at work for one more minute. The week hadn't gone by as smoothly as I'd hoped for but that wasn't anything new. Leaning back in my office chair, I brought my hands to rest behind my head while taking a few deep breathes. I was almost sure I was being tested today and I was on the verge of failing miserably. I scanned the room of people dressed in suits and ties, some in nice skirts. Some looked bored, some looked angry. I couldn't blame them, they'd just lost a million dollar contract with my firm. I'd be mad too.
"I gave you a choice, Max," I said, leaning forward and placing my arms against the glass surface of the table. "You chose to go behind my back and I warned you about what would happen if you did, its as simple as that."
The older man in front of me nodded, defeated. He was a brilliant man, a brilliant president of an extremely wealthy company but sometimes the most brilliant of people have slip ups. This just happened to be a major one for him.
When the meeting finally came to a closing, I untucked my shirt from my slacks and sat down at my desk. My eyes were starting to feel heavy and my body was giving into exhaustion. I couldn't have been more happy about the fact that I had the whole day off tomorrow to do with whatever I pleased. Picking up my cellphone off my desk, I dialed the only number that I usually called around this time at night.
"Hello?"
"Hey, Camz, I'm about to head home. Do you need me to stop and get anything from the store?" I asked, knowing that she'd probably need something. She usually did.
"Can you bring me some Reese's pieces?" Her tired voice asked quietly. It was one of the most beautiful sounds I had the blessing of hearing. I could never get tired of it. "And can you grab some hamburger buns? I thought we had some but I was wrong," she laughed and I smiled. "I don't think we can have a cook out without them.."
"I think you're right, baby. I'll stop and pick some up. Anything else you can think of?" I asked as my fingers tapped against the wood of my desk. My eyes slid over to look at the picture frame at the corner of my desk. It was Camila and I when we were in high school. She wore a blue plaid skirt with a red crop top and black strapped heels that extenuated her long legs. I felt my heartbeat start to quick at the sight.
"Babe?" Camila's voice snapped me out of my daze of the younger woman. I coughed a few times. "Are you even listening to me, Lauren?"
"Yeah," I cleared my throat and leaned back in my chair. I placed my phone between my shoulder and my cheek before stretching my arms above my head and groaning. I could hear her laugh quietly.
"Get that cute butt home."
"Yes ma'am," I grinned widely before standing from the chair and gathering a few papers that I had strung out across the desk and pushed them into my briefcase. "I'm leaving now," I informed her.
"Okay. Be careful, honey. I need you home safe and sound," she said genuinely and I exhaled a breath that didn't know I was holding. Even after all of these years, the small things she says makes me feel more loved than I ever had in my entire. It was amazing to say the least. "I love you."
"I love you, Camz," I replied honestly. I'd loved her for most of my life and I didn't plan on stopping anytime soon, or ever for that matter.
Pushing through the glass doors of my work, I walked out onto the street, the cold New York air whirled around me and made noises that sounded like the worst weather was yet to come. I pulled at my jacket and stood at the edge of the sidewalk where I flagged down yellow taxi. Driving in New York hadn't been one of my strong suits. I ended up angry and anxious all at the same time. Most of the people here seemed like they'd never driven a car in their life. I understood why people preferred walking.
"Where to?" The cab driver asked as I slid in and shut the door beside me.
"I need to stop by Chucks grocery store first," I replied, rubbing my hands together to try and gain some warmth. "I'll only be a few minutes," I explained and I could visibly see him relax. He didn't want to be in this weather as much as I didn't want to be in this weather.
We drove through the crowded streets. We waited for some pedestrians to cross the road a few times and I tried my hardest not to get upset. They took their time getting to the other side of the road and it was one of the most irritating things I'd ever witnessed.
We pulled up to Chucks and I hopped out of the taxi quickly before sprinting into the grocery and grabbing the few items my wife had sent me here to get. I check out rather quickly and rushed back to the taxi. We only had to drive for a few more minutes before he was pulling up to my building. I smiled and hand him a one hundred dollar bill. He went to hand me change but I shook my head.
"No, keep it. Please," I pressed before opening the door and getting out before he could protest further.
I entered the my security number in the keypad once I reached the doors. Once I heard the lock click open, I wasted no time pulling the door open and quickly made my way to the elevator. We lived on the tenth floor which took about two minutes for me to get to our unit, it was rather quick.
I reached my front door and realized my hands were too full to try and grab the key out of my pocket and open it. I could drop the bags but I'd rather not, so I decided on kicking the bottom of the door with my foot until it slung open and revealed a not so happy brunette.
"Seriously, Lauren?" She asked with roll of her eyes and I chuckled lightly. "You couldn't have put the bags down and opened the door on your own?" She placed her hand on the lower part of her stomach and hummed softly.
"How is she?" I asked, sitting the paper bags down on the counter and wiping my hands against the fabric of my slack to rid the dirty feeling from the brown sacks.
"She's moving a lot," Camila said, looking up at me through long eyelashes. You'd think she wore fake ones but no, they were natural. "Here, give me your hand," she reached out and grabbed my wrist before I could even attempt to move. She moved my hand around her around stomach until I felt something moving. "Did you feel that?"
I couldn't stop the large grin that spread across my face. Nodding yes, I placed my other hand on her large stomach and felt another kick. My heart was fluttering. I felt nervous and anxious. I couldn't believe Camila was pregnant, you'd think after eight months of her being pregnant I'd come to terms with the fact that she is pregnant, but I still hadn't.
"I think she knows it's you," she whispered before tucking her bottom lip between her teeth.
I looked down at her eyes before my gaze travelled further down to the skin tucked between her teeth. I knew she wasn't meaning to do it but it didn't help the fact that she was.
"Just kiss me," she laughed as if she were reading my mind.
I smiled before tilting my head down and pressing my lips softly against hers. She kissed back without any second thought. I felt her hand move from my own until it was placed on the back of my neck to keep me in place. We kissed sensually for a few minutes before she was softly moaning against my lips. That's when I knew it was time to stop.
"Lauren," she whined. "Please."
"I don't want to hurt you," I shook my head and moved my hands from her stomach to her hips.
"I'm not going to break, Lauren. I'm not some fragile being just because I'm pregnant."
"You're far from fragile," I laughed softly.
"Prove it," she challenged, her lips finding its spot between her teeth again.
"Not fair."
"Fuck me."
