Many things happen at night in Minecraft. Skeletons can attack normal people just seeking shelter. Spiders can attack whoever dares to go near them, for spiders are loners. But at the village known as Peacepeople, none of these happened. There were cobblestone walls that protected the huge village.
In that village were humans and villagers. Villagers had huge noses, but also huge hearts. Humans were braver than these villagers, and protected it from spiders that occassionally stumble by. Among these humans was a girl named Jacklin.
"Hey there, Jacklin!" called a baby villager, carrying bushels of wheat.
"Just call me Jack, Bob," she replied. "Whatcha got there?"
"Harvest. We were blessed this season," Bob said, wiping the sweat from his forehead. The sun shone brightly that day.
"Shouldn't your parents be working? And you should play, like other villagers your age," Jack said, pointing at other baby villagers. Everyone was running around, laughing, tossing around slime balls.
"Haha, my parents wanted me to work already," Bob said, rolling his eyes. "I'll see you later, Jack! Let's have cookies!"
Jack laughed, continuing to walk. Jack was young and pretty, with black hair she always put in two pigtails. Her signature red shirt and light blue jeans were a part of her. Along the way to the village library, she encounter another human girl, with red hair, blue eyes, and a black dress that totally contradicted her happy looks.
"Jack!" she said happily. "What a delight! I heard you found some pumpkins growing wild in a field."
Jack nodded. "I did, Gigi, and now we have seeds for the farm! Isn't it exciting?"
"But you know what's more exciting?" said two boys in chorus, who were behind Gigi. They were identical in looks, and looked similar to Gigi as well.
Jack raised an eyebrow. "Oh please. We can go to the watchtower later, boys. I still need to go to the library."
"Library?" said one of the boys. He had on a green shirt. He nudged the other boy, who had on a purple shirt. "Jace, what do you think would Little Miss Adventurous be doing in a library?"
"Um, studying for the Peacepeople High annual exams?" Jace said matter-of-factly. "Thanks for reminding me, Lace. Now I remember what I was supposed to do." He turned around in the direction of the library.
Lace made a raspberry noise. "Ack, I give up on you! Don't you guys ever wanna exit Peacepeople? See what's beyond the cobblestone walls?"
"I don't see why not," Gigi reasoned, "but big bro, we're still inexperienced. At least here, we're safe. No one died from a mob attack, even a spider, in a century."
"Oh, you're a lost cause, li'l sis," Lace said, giving Gigi a noogie. "You too, Jack. You kids just have no sense of adventure."
Lace walked away. Gigi gave a frustrated, yet almost dreamy, sigh. "If only he knew, huh, Jack?"
"Yeah. I was still a fetus when I began wondering what's beyond." Jack motioned at the houses around here. "Life here is safe, but a bit boring."
"Yup. I've gotta go, girl. I still have to help harvest. Bye."
"Bye," Jack said.
She went on to the village library, where a villager in magenta robes met her. The head librarian was very friendly to Jack, and Jack made it a point to be friendly to him, even though she was feeling bad at the moment on remembering how she was trapped in Peacepeople—forever
"Jack!" He smiled. "Back for more, I see. What'll it be today?"
"'The History Of Minecraft,' and 'Herobrine, Ender Dragons, Pigmen, And Other Myths,' please," Jack said, and the head librarian proceeded to get the said books.
"Return them by the day after tomorrow, or you'll get a fine of one emerald," said the head librarian. Jack smiled, thanked him, then went back home.
Her house had only one story, as other houses did. It had flowers in vases in front, which made it look welcoming. Inside the house Jack's mother was preparing dinner, while her father was negotiating with a villager to sell their goods.
"No, three emeralds for the wheat. How's that sound?" her father said, then quickly noticed her there. He smiled. "Hey there, kiddo! How was it?"
"Great so far," Jack said, unable to hide the boredom in her voice. "Dad, why does there have to be school?"
"Oh, you'd better ask your mom that," her father said, continuing to negotiate with the villager. "What's that? Four emeralds? That's a deal, pal. Now how about these carrots?"
In the kitchen, Jack found her mother cooking still. Jack sighed. "Mom, Dad told me to ask you why I have to go to school."
"Can't he answer it himself?"
"We go to school to learn new things," a tiny voice said. They all looked at the corner, where a little girl who looked a lot like Jack was sitting, playing with a toy wolf.
"You're too young to get it, Annie," Jack sighed.
"Jack, your sister's right. Peacepeople High is a wonderful institution. Is there anything you don't like about the school?"
"Mom, you're answering the question 'why not?' I'm looking for the answer to 'why'!"
Her mother laughed. She shook her head while setting down a healthy helping of cooked chicken and boiled eggs. "Jacklin, we need to be ready. If anything bad happens to the village, it's better if we come prepared. We know how to fight, and we won't get too culture-shocked when we're finally allowed to visit sister villages."
"Mom, they'll allow us to visit sister villages after a bajillion years." Jack rolled her eyes, carrying her books to the bedroom. And she began to burn her eyes to nonexistence with the process called "studying."
