"Oh my gosh, he's here!" I tell my best friend, Camille, over the phone, "I gotta go, bye!"
"Good luck, Lily!" I hear Camille say as I hang up the phone.
I look in the mirror: my lavender dress looks perfect with its matching heels, and my brown hair is curled perfectly. I quickly apply some pink lip gloss and open the door.
"Hey, Lily," a tall blonde boy smiles at me, "ready for the dance?" I nod. He gives me a quick kiss on the cheek.
We go out to his car, and he begins driving to the Annual Sophomore School Dance.
We pull up. Carson opens the door an helps me out of the car. He grabs my hand as we walk into the school and into the gym. Loud music is playing, lights are flashing, and people are eating and having a good time.
Someone taps me on the shoulder; I turn around and see James, my guy best friend, along with Camille. They went together as friends.
"Hey, guys!" I say smiling.
"Hi, Lily," James says. Carson gives me a weird look.
"These are your friends?" he asks me. I nod.
"Oh, well, you should hang out with cooler people, like my friends. Let's ditch these weirdos. Come on, babe," he takes my hand again and pulls me away. I turn around to see a sad looking Camille and James. I give them an I'm sorry! look.
"Hey, bro!" Lewis, Carson's friend says as Carson pulls me over to a group of people. Carson nods hello. I recognize all of the people in the group: Lewis, Mason, Jim, Lila, Mallory, Kendra, and Marissa. They are all popular people.
"Who's you pretty date?" Lewis asks. All of the guys nod in agreement. I feel self-conscious and cross my arms.
"This is Leah," Carson says.
"It's Lily," I corrected.
"Hey, Leah," Mason says, "looking good." Jim and Lewis whistle. I take a step back.
"Aw, come on, they're just kidding," Carson says. I'm not too sure.
"Woah, Mallory, looking sexy," Carson says, eyeing Mallory in her dress that was way too short.
"Excuse me!" I say, "She's not your date, I am!" Carson shrugs.
"Hey, you shouldn't be treating Lily like that," James appears at my side. I smile.
"What are you going to do, loser?" Carson says, shoving James roughly.
"She shouldn't be here with you," James says.
"Well, I asked her, and she said yes, right, Amy?" Carson looks at me. I don't respond.
"You don't even know her name! Why did you even ask her?"
"Because she was the only girl without a date," Carson answers, grabbing my hand.
"No," James says, "Lily is beautiful and smart and amazing. She makes me smile and laugh, and she brightens every day. Every time I see her, I get butterflies, and I never want to look away. Lily means the world to me." James looks me straight in the eye.
"I love her."
Carson and his friends walk away laughing.
I turn to look at James. He is close to me. Really close. I can hear his heart beating.
"I...I," he stammers for a second then runs away.
"Wait!" I call after him, but he doesn't come back.
I don't know what to do. I stand frozen for a second, then go out to find him.
I go outside of the gym and sit down on a bench.
"I blew it, I really blew it." I hear James' voice from down the hallway.
I begin walking. Past the posters advertising a fundraiser, past a couple making out in an open janitor's closet, and past a few classrooms. There, at the end of the hall, was James, slumped against the wall.
"Hey," I say, sitting down next to him.
"Oh, hi," he answers, "Listen, I'm really sorry. I don't know what got into me back there. I've just waited so long to express my feelings, I couldn't help it."
I stay silent.
"I understand if you don't want to be friends anymore. It's all my fault."
I think about how I feel. I think about the tingly feeling I get every time I'm near James. I remember the time I fell in the hallway, and James was there to help me up. I remember how much fun we had at the county fair over the last summer when James played a game 50 times just to win me a giant stuffed bear. I think about every time we hung out, and every time was amazing. I suddenly realized how much I like James, and how awful my life would be without him.
"No. I don't want to be friends anymore," I say. I can practically see James' heart drop.
"I want to be more than that."
James' eyes widen, and I hear his heart beat faster.
"L-Lily? Will you be my girlfriend?"
"Yes." James scrambles to his feet and helps me up.
"What? Really?" he asks.
"Maybe this will clarify it for you," I whisper.
I lean in and our lips touch for a moment before we pull away.
"That answers it for me, but maybe you'd like a clarification?" James murmurs.
James cups my face in his hands, and we kiss again.
"Hey, what are you doing with my date?" It's Camille.
"Sorry, Camille," I say, and we all laugh.
"I know it's a little late, but will you be my date for the dance? I can pick you up right now!" James says.
I smile and nod. James takes my hand, and we walk back into the dance for what turns out to be one of the best nights of my life.
