Looking out the window at the gloomy fog and rain currently explained my mood. Everything went by in a blur as my foster care agent drove for miles upon miles. I don't know how long we drove, with my mind going a thousand miles a minute, but I know I was far away from everything I was accustomed to. The green pastures around me were anything but familiar to me. I grew up in a city, not some low life farm place with acres of corn growing.
The foster care agent looked at me, "I hope you like it here Rhea. This is the tenth foster home this year. I'm sure you'll find good foster parents in no time." He tried to smile at me but I could tell it was forced. He didn't understand that the reason they didn't want me was because I made sure I lashed out at every little thing possible.
Next thing I know we are pulling up to the drive way of my very next hellhole. Looking out the car, the house looked pretty small, but not too small. It was a one story house and looked like something a grandmother would live in once she was all on her own. There was an array of flowers lining the front of the structure and two run down rocking chairs on the front porch.
Before I could fully get out of the car I was being ambushed by two people hugging me. I presume they were my new foster parents. My arms laid limp at my sides as I let them hug me.
Finally they both pulled away and gave me full blown smiles. "Hello Rhea! It's so nice to finally meet you!" said the lady. She was about 5'2 with graying hair and a slim figure. She seemed to be in her late forties.
"Hi Rhea, I'm glad you will be staying with us for the time being." This was the man's turn. He reached his hand out for a shake and I hesitantly shook it. He was also graying like his wife but he was on the larger side of things and had a kind look to him.
I just smiled as politely as I could manage and they led me into the house. I walked behind slightly as the agent talked amongst them. I took in my surroundings. One thing I noticed is that there were no family photos on the wall. That means I was the only one here.
I had been looking at and old grandfather clock when I heard my name being called. I looked up and all three adults were looking at me.
"Yeah?" I didn't bother with being polite. I was going to be gone in about a month, no need to be nice.
"Debrah and Samuel wanted to know if it was alright if I left," said the agent.
"Oh yeah, sure whatever." I brushed him off.
Once he left, my new foster parents, aka Debrah and Samuel, looked at me for a minute.
"Do you guys need something?" I asked with a curious glance.
"Oh honey, let me show you to your room! Follow me." She was like a huge ray of sunshine, oh god.
I rolled my eyes, but followed her anyways. Once down the hall and to the back of the house, Debrah opened a door.
"Here you go, there isn't much because I didn't know what you liked, but I was hoping we could go shopping together and get you new things." She smiled widely and I just wanted to hurl. Why is she so excited?
"Oh, uh, sure."
"Anyways, I hope you find your stay welcoming. Just ask for anything, don't be shy. I'm just up the hall, the only door on the left." With that, she was gone.
Sighing, I started to unpack my things. There was only a bed in the corner of the room and a small vintage looking dresser on the wall opposite. I put the small amount of clothes I had in there and laid down on the bed. I wasn't looking for permanent. I didn't need a home. I could live just fine on my own.
A knock on my door pulled me from my thoughts. "Come in"
Debrah peeks through the door. "Just wanted to remind you that you'll be starting school tomorrow morning. Don't bother with an alarm, I'll wake you up for breakfast."
Before I could reply, she was gone again.
School. That stupid word. The second hellhole that I had to go to. Moving from places constantly had me not trying to make friends anymore. I'd only be at a place for a couple of months and be shipped off to another stupid foster home. It was the same every time. I'd be the new kid in a small town, probably get into a fight with someone who decided to get in my way, and then be called to the principal's office which only led to transferring to a new school. It's not my fault that people can't keep their comments to themselves. If they get to say whatever the hell they want to say then I should be able to use my fists whenever I wanted to. It only seemed fair right? Yeah, well the principals never thought it was funny. Whatever, their loss. I'm not losing anything.
Those thoughts swirled through my head as I fell asleep.
******************************
Waking up was like a huge brick in the face. Debrah, as promised, came to wake me up at six o'clock precisely. Let's just say I'm not a morning person. Six o'clock was not considered morning to me. This dampened my mood right away.
I trudged down the stairs and lazily sat down on a bar stool. Debrah was humming a song while she cooked. Well, until she turned around.
"Oh heavens! You are quite quiet on your feet aren't ya?" She playfully placed her hand on her heart. "You scared me half to death. Anyways I hope you like pancakes!" She smiled brightly at me.
I mumbled an answer and she turned back around to continue cooking.
I stared at her for a long time. She wasn't like the other foster parents I've had. Many were perverts, addicts, or just completely didn't want anything to do with me. They were in it precisely for the money. There was something about Debrah that was pure and happy. It was a nice change. That didn't mean I was going to be nice anytime soon. I've learned the hard way that people could change on you in mere seconds so keeping up was what I was going to do.
I finished breakfast quickly and Debrah rushed me into the car with her. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't nervous. Going to a new school always sucked, didn't matter how many times I had to do it, it was hard each and every time. I really didn't care what people thought of me but not having friends can be quite lonely and boring in my opinion.
The school was only five minutes down the road from where we were so it didn't take long before I was running out of the car towards the front office. I didn't know where it is, but I sure as hell wasn't having Debrah walk me there.
I awkwardly squeezed my way through people in the crowded hallway until I saw a sign on the wall reading "Front Office". Just a few more steps until I...
Next thing I know, I was on the ground. "What the hell?" I looked around confused.
"Watch where the fuck you're going next time." A low grunt sounded from above me. Looking up, I saw the most beautiful eyes. They were a piercing green, reminding me of a forest. I almost got lost in them until I realized that these particular eyes were glaring at me.
I merely laughed once I registered what he said. "Me? Watch where I'm going? What about you asshole? It's not just me who ran into you."
"Excuse me?" He took a huge step towards me, glaring menacingly down at me.
"I'm pretty sure you heard me big guy. Watch where the fuck you're going too."
In a flash, he grabbed my upper arm and whispered in my ear. "Listen here girly, if you knew who I was, you wouldn't be brave enough to say what you just said to me. So, why don't you just shut your big mouth and run along now." With that, he was walking around the corner of the hallway.
I was stunned. Who the hell was that?
