Prologue
Sahara Hart edged closer to the lip of the roof. She looked over the ledge without any hesitation in her step.
Her gown billowed around her and the cold winter air kissed her ankles but she paid it no attention. Instead her attention was riveted on the expanse of black, jagged rocks that stretched out far below her.
The black of the rocks merged with the oily blackness of the Sea. The black was so similar to the steely blackness of his wings that it hitched her breath up a notch. I will make sure you suffer. No. No more. She couldn't forget that he hadn't been talking to her.
Sahara tilted her head to the side, intrigued. So uncanny were the ways of nature that even the formless strength of water could erode the hardest and sharpest of stones. It gave her another burst of calm for what she was about to do. She could count on the mass of water to wash her away from the sands of time.
He wouldn't find her then. He wouldn't torment her, or kill her slowly like he had countless. She wouldn't have to worry about surviving those cutting grey eyes, or those cruelly beautiful wings of night.
He always came in her dreams and sometimes even barged into her daylight conscience. She treasured those moments when she was truly alone in her own mind. He was always there, omnipresent in her mind.
Sahara pointed her toe over the edge of the roof, ready to end her joke of a life.
Wait, there was one last thing left to do. She brought her right wrist up to her left shoulder and ripped the white plastic strip off with her other hand. The wind was making her eyes blurry but she didn't find it any difficult to recognize the words on the strip.
Morgan Fey Mental Asylum
Patient ID 323345
England
She smiled humorlessly as the words and numbers played in her head. She knew them like the back of her hand. She glanced at the rocks again. No more nightmares. No more gibberish about Angels and Demons. No more nonsense about the game of destiny. No more torture.
Peace.
That was all she was aiming for. Some would say she was giving up. That life had defeated her. She didn't mind. She lived with the endless chatter of hundreds in her mind, they didn't. She survived his presence everyday, survived the cruelty that existed no where but in her mind.
She wanted to live free, needed to live free.
She released the plastic strip clutched tightly in her palm, letting it flit away on the moonless winter wind.
Good Bye Zachareal. Wish you the worst of luck.
This time the smile that touched Sahara's lips was genuine. She closed her eyes, turned around and tipped backwards.
Sahara Hart fell to her death, peace a beacon ahead of her.
Sahara felt herself accelerating as she sliced through the cold winds. No panic, no regret. She welcomed the biting pain of winds cutting against her bare skin. Her gown ballooned around her thighs, fighting to shift higher.
She saw his hard grey eyes and those large beautiful, beautiful wings behind her closed lids. Sahara spread out her arms in a futile attempt to mimic the majestic beauty of those wings.
A head jarring stop. Flailing limbs. A furious head rush.
And then the unmistakable change of direction accompanied by the whoosh of powerful wings.
Sahara snapped open her eyes and what she saw made her scream even harder than the shock treatment had.
He was real. He was here. He wouldn't leave her in her death too.
Zachareal.
