"But I don't want any!"

My patience was growing thinner by the moment.

"Now Kathy, you need to eat your broccoli because it's good for you. Don't you want to grow up to be big and strong?" I managed through gritted teeth.

"No! I don't want it! I. Do. Not. Want It!" My little sister hollered. And I stress the little part. How can someone so young be so annoying?

"Kathy, please..," I begged, yeah begged, for her cooperation.

Kathy screamed, "No,no,no!" while stomping her feet and clenching her small fists. The kid is only eight. There was no way I was going to let her take charge. I bit my lip as I plopped three tiny pieces of broccoli on my sister's plate.

Bad mistake.

"No!!" Kathy screamed louder than before, if that was even possible. "Stop! Stop it! I said I don't want any! Keith!"

"Will you please get over it?!" I finally snapped back. "It's not the end of the world. You're so picky! And I'm tired of dealing with your fuckin-"

Of course I stopped myself. If you have any younger siblings, you know better than to curse in front of them. They will commit that word to memory and hunt you down. Then, they'll repeat it anytime and anywhere, presumably in front of your parents if you're really lucky.

Of course Kathy recognized the curse word before I finished the sentence. Fuck..

Her black eyes widened. "Ooooh! You said a bad word!"

"N-No I didn't!"

She grinned mischievously before screeching, "I'm telling mom!" , and running to the house phone. Normally, I would have tackled her to the ground the minute I heard the words, "I'm telling..", but I was tired of arguing. I watched in defeat as Kathy stretched her hand to pick up the phone, knowing I'd have to invent an excuse later.

And then, as if on cue, our house phone rang.

Kathy stared at me in curiosity. "Hey, I don't know this number.."

I shuffled lazily over to the phone. It was probably some man trying to sell us something. Or that idiot who never answers when we pick up the phone. I took one glance at the caller ID and a huge smile painted my face. I snatched the phone from Kathy in an instant, nearly knocking her down. But I didn't care. I was too happy to care. Nothing seemed to matter anymore.

"Hello!" I said, smiling like I had the winning lottery ticket. Which I didn't. But I did have one, free, imaginary ticket to talk to my favorite girl. And maybe that was better than winning some stupid lottery.

Maybe.

"Hi, Keith! How are you?" Laura's sweet, sweet voice replied. God, how does she manage to still sound so freaking adorable over phone? I felt Kathy poke me in my side.

"Who is it?" Kathy pestered. I tried to push her away.

"Um yeah, I'm good over here. I'm, really good over here actually.." My voice unconsciously trailed off as I played with the phone cord.

"Yeah, t-that's nice? I guess." Laura answered.

"Yeah, it's, nice..." I replied dreamily.

"Who is it?" Kathy asked again, raising her tone with impatience. I looked over my shoulder and shot my sister a big smile.

"Is it-?" My sister began. My smile only grew wider as I nodded. "Oh, it's Laura, isn't it?"

I heard Laura clear her throat on the phone. She sounded nervous about something.

Laura began. "Um, so actually Keith, I called to ask you something.."

My heart raced. Finally! Laura was going to confess her love for me! I whipped out my phone hurriedly; I was going to set her confession for my ringtone!

"Yes?" I asked in anticipation.

"Well, I wanted to know if maybe.."

"Maybe?" I repeated with a grin as I began to record. I was like a crazy dad recording his baby's first words. But you can't blame me. I swear it's not my fault. You truly don't know how long I've been waiting for this moment. I already told Laura how I felt about her, and everyone knew that she liked me back; She's just too shy to admit it.We've known each other since fifth grade. We shared our first kiss together. And we're still "best friends"? I'd like a relationship upgrade.

Laura took a deep breath. She's really going to do it. "I wanted to know if maybe I could come over today."

My smile faded. What?

There was a brief silence. Even Kathy asked what was wrong.

"Sure." I stated, monotoned. "Hello? Laura, are you there?"

Laura had hung up immediately, only adding to my confusion.

I hung up the phone quietly and put away my cell. What just happened? Were my hopes too high again? And if so, why was I so surprised? This always happened. It's routine now. Before Kathy could force me into a round of twenty questions, there was a sudden knock on the door.

She ran over and opened it while yelling, "Who is it?!"

"Kathy..," I sighed her name. "What did I tell you about doing that?" I've told my sister time and time again that when someone is at the door, she is to ask who it is and then open the door. I quickly rushed over to make sure it was someone we knew.

I was half surprised by the visitor's appearance.
