I walked to my locker one last time before I would see Josh after school. I put down my textbooks, and popped a piece of peppermint gum in my mouth. I ran a brush through my hair, and re-hydrated my lips with peppermint lip balm. I take a deep breathe and walk towards biology with Malarie. The double doors swing open. There are many rows of two-person tables. Of course Malarie and I sit next to each other. Mr. Carbellas is sitting at his desk in the front with his hands clasped on his keyboard watching everyone sit down. I can tell there are quite a few sophmores in this class. The tardy bell rang, and with that, our Biology teach stood up and walked to the front of the class.
"So, it seems we have quite an intelligent group here. Hm. Here is your syllabus. Take one pass it down. Hm, okay. Look it over..." He fumbled with his words. Something was odd about this guy. I slid the syllabus into my binder without looking it over. I felt my iphone buzz. I slid it out of my back pocket, and held it under the desk. It was from Luke. Great. 'What the hell is wrong with you!?' the message read. I figured he was talking about when I hurt Jenny in P.E. 'What was I supposed to do, let her get away with breaking my nose?! What's your problem anyways?! You've had a sweet spot for her all day!' I was enraged. How could he?! Does he expect me to apologize? No. No way in hell am I doing that. I thought. He responds quickly. 'You know what, I'm done hiding! Jenny and I have been dating since June. I didn't want to tell you, or mom or dad. If I told them, they would tell you, and if you knew you would just throw a tantrum! I also knew she would be a witch to you, she just hates freshmen. Especially freshmen that she has to compete with. You're beautiful Phoebe, just don't let that get in your way.' That was suprisingly deep. WAIT- I read it again. He's been dating Jenny since June?! Oh my God! I almost let my jaw drop, but then I realized where I was. Biology class. It sunk in as I snapped back into reality. Mr. Carbellas' voice droned on and on. I picked at my dry cuticles until the bell rang. Finally. I picked up my binder and took my phone out again. I still had no idea how to reply to Luke's text. I walked slowly towards my locker despite my heart beating so fast. I set down my last remaining textbook, and put my lunch box and binder in my leather bag. I fixed my hair as fast as I could and texted Malarie to tell her what was going on. When I shut my locker, Josh was standing right where the open locker door had been.
"Hey." He said.
"Hi." I replied. And with that, we both smiled, and walked to Steinbeck park.
