Sisters of Mercy

We were down in some kind of tunnel because Citizen Z there was something down here. We were all walking along when we heard footsteps.
"Hold it right there." said Warren
"Oh, it's the damn wonder twins." said Doc
"Guys!" I said running to Addy and Mac giving them a big bear hug. "I missed you."
"Citizen Z send you guys?" asked Warren
"Yeah. He told us there was food and somebody named Chester who could help us out." Mac said.
"Yeah, he told us that too. We're starting to have our doubts." said Warren
"Hey, hey. What happened to her?" Mac asked about Cass.
"She got caught on a piece of barbed wire. Now it's all infected." I said while she was leaning against me.
A Z came out of nowhere and Addy grabbed her bat and kept punching it in the face repeatedly.
"Well I guess we found Chester. Hello, Chester." Addy said
"Somebody got up on the wrong side of the apocalypse." said Murphy.
"What happened to you guys out there?" Warren asked Mac.
"She's working out some stuff." said Mac. "You know how things can catch up with you."
"Chester? You got them yet? You got my team? Hello? Anyone? Warren? Autumn , it's Hey, hey, hey! Up here! It's your old pal, Citizen Z." I looked around and saw a computer screen.
"Oh, it's everyone. Hi, everyone." said Citizen Z
"Hi!"
"Autumn, looking gorgeous as always." Mac came up behind me. "Oh, hey uh, you must be Mack. Huh, kinda thought you'd be taller." said Citizen Z
"I thought you'd be old enough to shave." said Mac right back.
"Hey, Murphy. Squeeze in so I can see you. Oh, hey. Yeah, lookin' good, sir. So guess what? I've got good news. California's back. They're alive and online, well most of them. But they're getting ready for you, and the dream is alive. The mission is a go, thanks to yours truly. That's good news, right?" said Citizen Z
"Good news would be a package of Oreos and a couple gallons of milk." said Murphy
"Oh, oh yeah, right. Sorry. Down the same hall, next door on your left. Should be everything that you need. I can't tell you how good it is to see you all again."
"Good to see us too, kid. Oh, hey, what was this place anyway?" asked Doc
"It used to be a CIA black site." said Citizen Z
"Oh, like waterboarding, Zero Dark Thirty, black site?" said Doc
"Yeah, I kinda thought it would be obvious from what Chester told me." said Citizen Z. "So where is the old crackpot anyway?"
We moved aside and showed him the mess on the floor.
"Oh man. Bummer." We said goodbye to Citizen Z, grabbed our supplies and headed back on the road. As we were driving along we say a kid in a flower shirt.
"Oh Whoa, Warren. Slow up here, will ya" I said
"It's just a kid."
"That is not a kid. It's zombie road kill." Warren said as we kept driving along.
"Ten o'clock. Another kid and he's alive." said Doc
"I got this one. Hey, whoa. You okay?" asked Warren pulling over.
"A little thirsty is all."
"Of course. Hold on. Water." I said
"Thanks."
"Here you go, champ." Warren said giving him the water.
"Thanks, ma'am."
"You can call me Roberta. What's your name?"
"I'm Sam."
"Sam. Does your mom know you're out here all by yourself?" I asked
" I'm going to Salt Lake City to see my dad." said Sam
"That's not a good idea."
"Yes, it is. I'm old enough now. I finally get to meet my dad" said Sam
"It's too far and It's not safe." Warren said.
"It's not too far. Brennan and Dax are already there."
"Sam. Salt Lake City's been overrun by zombies." I said
"Yeah, right." Sam said walking off.
"Uh, wait, wait, Sam. You're right. You are old enough to go see your dad. But here's the thing. We've run out of food. Can you help us?" Mac asked.
"My friend Helen could help you get some food."
"Cool. Will you show us where they live? Tell you what. You take us there, we will drive you to Salt Lake City. Okay?" Sam nodded and headed toward the truck.
"Murphy, move." Mac said as we let them kid in. " Hey man, I'm Mack."
We drove about 10 miles down the road when Sam told us to take a right.
"Just up there."
"Anybody home? Doesn't look like it. Mack, you want to check it out?" Warren asked.
"Yeah." As Mac got out of the truck we heard a gunshot in the air.
"Get back in the truck! You're not welcome here!" A woman yelled.
"Hold on. Hold on. It's okay. We're friendly.  We have your boy! We have Sam!" I yelled.
"Hold your fire! Open the gate."
"Ms. Helen, it's okay. They just need food. They're nice. It's good to see you, Sam. Why don't you go inside and find your mother? I'm sure she's anxious to see you. Thank you for bringing him back. Sometimes our kids get cabin fever and decide to go exploring." said Helen.
"What's wrong with you?" she asked Cass."
"It's infected."
"Oh, that could be dangerous. We can help you. You've arrived at the Sisters of Mercy. Women and children only here. You can go inside with your friend. But your men will have to stay outside the wall. We'll give you 24 hours. You can rest, get some food, and then you'll leave us." said Helen
"That's very fair of you. And you are?" asked Warren
"Helen. And you?"
"Lieutenant Roberta Warren. Missouri National Guard."
"Addy."
"Autumn and this is Cass." I said holding her. "Can you help her? She has an infected leg."
"Take her to the infirmary."
"I'm coming with"
"Come on." said a lady and I followed her. When we got to the infirmary, I help lay her down on the bed.
"It is very beautiful here." I said. She looked over at Cass and said, "Most importantly for you, penicillin."
"You have penicillin here?"
"Amy makes it herself. She used to be a chemist." said Lina.
"Thank you." I said. I sat by Cassandra as she was resting and Amy bringing me food. Warren all of the sudden burst in
"We got to go now. You seen Addy?" asked Warren
"No."
"We will find her on the way out." said Warren
" Come on Cass, we got to go." I grabbed her and started walking through the gates to Mac and Doc.
"What happened?" asked 10k
"I don't know Warren told me to leave so I grabbed Cass."
Addy walked out of the gate and came to Mac and me. " Hey can we go talk somewhere real quick?" she asked
"Uh, yeah. Yeah, of course." Mac and I said. "10k watch Cass."
"It's so beautiful. I wish you could see it." she said to Mac
"Yeah, I wish I could too."
"It's so different from out here. I feel safe. I haven't felt that in such a long time."
"That's good. I'm glad.  I'm sure it's gonna be hard to leave." Mac said
"That's what I wanted to talk to you about. It's too much. I can't do it anymore, guys."
"But Addy I can't stay with you here." Mac said
"I need to rest."
"Addy why are you doing this you are like my sister please stay with us. After all we've been through."
"I can't. I'm sorry" Addy turned around and started to head for the gates.
"No. No, no, no, no, no, no." I said crying
"Addy Addy, come on. Come on. I love you." said Mac
" I love you so much. I cannot go back out there and watch you die." said Addy
"I'm not gonna die."
"Yes, you will. We all will. And this is how I want to remember you guys. I cannot kill somebody I love ever again."
"I'm not going back out there without you, Addy. I'm not. I can't."
"This is for the best."
"Addy. Addy, wait." I said "What about Murphy, huh? And the mission? You said, you said you would rather die believing in something than live believing in nothing."
"I have to go."
"You don't need Helen and some stupid cult. Addy." I collapsed on the floor crying.
Doc came over and picked me up and brought me to the car. I looked at Cass and told her everything.
Warren knew to what was happening and Doc dragged Mac into the car and hugged me and cried.
"Stop the truck." Mac yelled
"No. Mac" I followed him out and looked at him. "Please don't leave."
He gave me his necklace and told me no matter what we will meet again someday.
"Mac! Mac! Stop!" I screamed chasing him but 10k got out and grabbed me and put me in the car and we left.
"We have to go back." I eventually fell asleep crying in 10k arms.
