Flashback 12 years ago
Heavy rain poured down as James Thirlwall's casket was lowered on the ground. Eleven year old Jade whose hands were clutched tightly on a single white rose weeped amidst the horrifying sounds of thunder clashing above the skies. Her father, the town sheriff died three days ago and the family want nothing more but justice.
Their cries were barely audible and their tears disappeared in the rains, but the sadness in their hearts remained intact as the years passed.
Present Day
"Congratulations!" The guests cheered as Jade Thirlwall opened the door to their house in London. Today's her graduation celebration and she was indeed surprised to see a couple of her friends and family greet her with a surprise party.
"Oh my Gosh!" Jade blurted out the minute a small confetti cannon burst just above her head.
Happiness evident on their faces, and Jade gave each and everyone of her loved ones a hug and a quick thanks for their present. The night went on to be filled with laughter but as time passed, the visitors finally decided to call it a night.
"So what are your plans Jadey? Now that you're done with college." Karl Thirlwall asked his younger sister as they both sat down finishing their glass of wine while their mom collected the dishes.
"Well nothing new, I'm planning on moving out and you know get a job here." She replied as she took a sip of her drink.
"Nonsense!" Their mom interrupted as she too sat on the table joining her children.
Jade heaved a sigh, it was always conversations like this that her mother always seemed to disapprove.
"Mom, we've discussed this already. I'm old enough to live on my own now and besides I don't want to be a burden here." She responded.
"Jade's right mom, don't you think it's time for her to get an apartment of her own." Karl said as he crossed his arms over his chest.
"What's wrong with living here? The house is big enough for all of us." Norma Thirlwall stated while wiping her wet hands with her apron.
Jade shook her head and downed the remaining drops of alcohol.
"Mom, it's not that I don't like living with you, I do, I really do...it's jut that I want to be on my own now, and it's no big deal. I'm a grownup now mom and there's nothing to worry about. I'll come here every week and I promise I won't ever leave you. I'll always be your litle Jadey mom." Jade said. Her mom shook her head and wasn't too pleased with her daughter's decision.
"But you don't have money yet. How would you pay your own bills?" Her mom questioned.
"That's why I'm gonna find a job." Jade smiled and went on to hug her mom until a knock interrupted their conversation."Oh I'll go get it." Karl said and hurriedly stood up from his seat and went on to answer whoever was at the door.
"It's pretty late who could that be?" Norma mumbled."Uncle Blake!" Karl yelled at the front door and both Norma and Jade turned their heads. Blake Shelton, her father's cousin was their only family who never left South Shields. He was the one who took care of the family's house after they had fled, and now they were all so surprised to see him here in London. He still looks the same since the day they left and it seems like he hasn't aged at all.
"Well, well..Look at you Karl! You're a man now!" His voice echoed throughout the house as her brother got engulfed in a hug.
"Wow! Uncle Blake it's so good to see you, come in, come in...Mom, Jade uncle Blake is here!" Karl shouted across the room.
"Now where's our little Jadey eh?" He said as he walked into the dining room carrying a brown bag made of sack in his hands. His large slightly torn coat hang loosely on his broad shoulders.Jade got up from her seat and before he could even reach the dining area, Blake's eyes widened when a young woman with long brown hair and bambi eyes stood in front of him.
"Whoah! You're our little Jadey?" His voice questioned.
"Nice to see you uncle Blake." Jade spoke as a sharp smile wrinkled his uncle's face, he nearly forgot that it's been twelve years since they last saw each other.
"Oh, silly me I was expecting you to be a bit smaller eh.." He spoke but Jade soon engulfed him in a tight hug.
"Oh, Karl here told me today's your graduation party, well I got a present for ya! I'm not too late am I?" He spoke then went inside the dining room and placed the bag on the table.
"Good to see you Blake!" Norma said as she too stood up from her seat."Potatoes and corn! Fresh from 'ol South Shields." His uncle spoke and Jade smiled at what his uncle had brought her.
"You know I remembered how much ya loved these back then so I brought ya guys some." His uncle said as he sat on the chair and wiped his face with his hands. The thing about South Shields was that everything was so simple. The town itself seems to be isolated from the modern world and people tend to live without new technologies. Not to mention how the place always seemed to be so gloomy, foggy and cold almost all throughout the year. The settlers rely mostly on crops and farming. Hunting and fishing is how they gather fresh meat, yet the community seems to go on with it. But there is something Jade couldn't seem to understand about her hometown, how mysterious it appears to be, not that she dislikes it. But ever since the death of her father, she's found no reason to return at all.
The rest of the family went on to talk about how they have led their lives all these years, and Jade felt like she somehow missed the place where she spent her childhood years, until the mere mention of her father's name brought back the whole reason why they left in the first place.
"Ey Jadey, I got another present for ya." Blake spoke as he scrambled to get something from his pocket.
Jade's eyes narrowed as his uncle took a piece of small envelope and handed it to her.
"Uhh.. what's this?" She asked as she glanced at the wrinkled piece of paper.
"Yer dad gave it to me many years ago, told me I should give it to you when you're old enough." He spoke as he chewed the piece of turkey Norma had served him.Just as Jade tried to open the letter, Blake's hand stopped her.
"Read it after I finish my meals, I should be going back to Shields after." He said with a smug grin on his face. After that, Blake decided it was time to go, even though Norma insisted that he could stay since it's almost midnight.
"Nah, it's not fullmoon until three days so the place is safe and the sun will be rising in a few hours." He spoke while putting on his torn hat.
Norma seemed to get what his husband's cousin meant so she just nodded instead.
The whole family led him to the door and as soon as they bid their goodbyes, Blake turned once more."Yer Dad's proud o' ya Jadey...see ya!" And then he was off.
After Blake had left, Jade went into her room. She stared at the envelope for a few minutes before finally deciding to tear it open..
