Max groaned heavily, his Aqua blue orbs glazed with boredom glancing outside the scratched beaten window of Davids poor excuse of a car.
For some damn reason he had decided to go for a drive with David on a quick errand. God, why had he decided to go again? Probably to shut up the peppy camp man. At the very least it kinda worked? The drive surprisingly, was rather silent other than the occasional impatient tapping of his fingers or Davids soft humming to a random tune on the staticky radio station. It was almost peaceful, or at least, that was what Max had thought. His bright eyes intensely followed the continuous blur of tall green trees as they stormed by. Max could tell all of the different kinds of trees apart thanks to David and his extensive never ending knowledge of the forest. He counted the different types in his head as they sped by. "Pine, Birch, Cedar, Spruce, Pine, Maple, Spruce..." Suddenly a worried voice pierced through Max's thoughts "Max are you alright?" Interrupted David, concern was etched across his face. "You haven't said a word since we got in the car... usually by now you would have said something..." Davids brows were starting to furrow and his ocean green gaze was fixed more on Max and less on the road. Max sighed "David... it's jus-" the young boy was about to finish his sentence when he noticed a strange deformed figure on the road and they quickly passed by. "D-David!! Stop the car goddammit!" He shrieked as loud as he possibly could. The camp counsellor out of pure panic slammed his boot viscously on the brake and the car screeched to a sudden stop.
"Max please warn me next time you're going to do that we could have gotten in a car accident and are you oka-"
His expression became doleful when he noticed that Max had already vanished from the vehicle and was now sprinting at full speed down the side of the busy highway, the door on the passenger side was still open, swinging slightly from side to side from the quick impact of Max shoving his way out.
"Oh gosh I'm a terrible dad." David mumbled to himself with a sigh. He hastily unbuckled his seatbelt, swung open his door and dashed after the jaded 10 year old. David's heart pounded faster, he began to get closer to the young boy. He took notice to the vibrant blue of his hoodie and the way his fluffy raven hair constantly bounced around when he ran.
"Max! Please slow down" cried David, he exhaustingly bent over and placed his hands on his florid knees for support. "Gosh darn it that kid sure is fast for having small legs" David huffed under jagged breaths.
Max wasn't too far ahead. In fact there was just a few meters of separation between them. Max had carelessly fallen on his knees and he gently cradled something soft in his arms like a child, the creatures small head was timidly burrowed into the nook of his neck.
David's expression seemed to soften at the sight of Max tenderly holding this tiny animal. Max took notice to the gravely footsteps of David approaching behind him. "David... I couldn't just leave her here..." the younger boy's face was downcast with pity, landing upon the small creature huddling for warmth among the fabric of his hoodie. A gentle smile climbed it's way onto Davids face. "Awe Max it's alright I'm proud of you for finding her, she probably wouldn't have made it out here if you hadn't seen her" he exclaimed, quirkily kneeling down with Max and wrapping a supportive arm around his shoulder.
Both father and son's eyes flickered warmly down to the puppy on Max's lap. Her little tail started to wag with affection at and their hearts practically melted. "She... reminded me of myself." Max murmured as he stroked the dog's soft chestnut fur. David almost felt his heart snap in two when he heard those words. "What about her makes you think of yourself?... if you don't mind me asking?" A faint bit of worry was present on Davids face as he fumbled with his ragged yellow scarf. Max exhaled with a deep sigh his expression, rather absent. "She was just alone... nobody cared about her" he choked holding the animal tight to his chest like a mother protecting it's child. Max had to admit it felt so wrong. This whole thing felt so wrong. He didn't want to expose the weak vulnerable part of himself to David of all people but he knew David would help. He always seemed to find a way to help in the end. Wet tears started to well up in his Aqua eyes. David instinctively wrapped his arms around Max in a strong embrace. "Well you have someone now" whispered David softly, he wiped some of the stray tears away with his thumb. "Thanks David" he replied with a sniff. "Anytime Max, I care about you and your wellbeing" clarified David with a lighthearted smile. "Aaaaannnyyywaaaayyysss"
Max interjected, refusing to break eye contact with the happy camp man.
"Can I keep her?" David raised an eyebrow but was unable to hide the expanding grin on his face. "Of course Max! Everyone deserves to have a little furry friend!" The boy could see David's enthusiasm for miles as the little puppy started to repeatedly lick his face with it's slobbery pink tongue. "AHAHAHHHAHAHAAAHA STOP THAT" screeched Max as he fell over with laughter. David let out a genuine chuckle as well.
All went silent for a moment.
A moment.
Now it was Max's turn to raise an eyebrow.
"David?"
"Yes Max?"
"YOU FUCKING MORON YOU LEFT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL"
The vehicle started casually rolling away from them, free of its driver.
Max instantly rolls on the ground with obnoxious laughter as he watches David frantically chase after the moving vehicle. He softly glances down at the puppy in his arms. Her head tilts to the side curiously and Max feels himself buried into the deep gaze of her chocolate brown eyes. "I think I'll call you Charlie".
