A/N: Okay so I've been writing this for over a month now. xD I just finished the first chapter. I'm actually pretty proud of it.
Prologue
Harry Styles knew what he wanted for his fifth birthday. He had known since last year, in fact. The perky, green-eyed little boy wanted nothing more than his own cat. He had asked for one the year prior, but his parents wanted to wait until he was a little older and more capable of owning and caring for a pet.
"Now, Harry," his mother had said solemnly, "you know that this is not a toy, don't you? You will have to feed it and care for it responsibly--"
"Yes, Mummy, I understand," he had groaned in reply.
He didn't understand why he had to be reminded. Cats didn't look or act like toys.
With just a few days until Harry's birthday, he and his mum were searching in the papers, online, and any other place that might advertise a cat. Harry was excited, very much so. He felt like a big boy now.
Eventually, Harry's mum came across an ad in a newspaper stating that there was a neutered male orange tabby cat being given away. His name was Noah, and he was two years old. Harry and his mum agreed on it and called up the owners. They stated that they were soon to be renting a house that did not allow animals, so they had to get rid of him before they moved, and their own son was heartbroken. They agreed to meet at the Styles household on Harry's birthday, which was the very next day. Harry whined and complained for the rest of the day, wishing that it would be night time already so he could go to sleep. But, when he went to bed that night, his mind was filled with excitement. He couldn't manage to fall asleep until late at night, when he could hardly hold his eyelids open anymore.
The next morning, Harry's mum woke him for school. He dreaded suffering through today. He just wanted to get his cat, and he didn't even like his class anyway. His teacher was okay, but still.
Even worse was the day he had. After the school day was half over, the younger students went outside for a break. Harry had friends off and on, but his best friend who always stayed was Louis Tomlinson. He sat in the grass with Louis, and for some reason decided to grab his hand and hold it. Louis just looked up at him and grinned. Harry liked Louis, in a friendly way. They had met when Louis had defended Harry when a few kids were making fun of his shirt. They were just friends after that.
"Ew, look. They're holding hands!" a second grader shouted, causing others to look as well.
Harry and Louis both blushed.
"S-so?" Harry stuttered, clearly embarrassed. "We're friends."
The other children ignored Harry's statement, chanting, "Harry likes boys! Louis likes boys!"
"No!" Louis shouted, tears welling up in his eyes.
He rudely yanked his hand out of Harry's and ran over to cry behind a tree, leaving Harry by himself, listening to the insults fly by like knives.
"Louis?" Harry called weakly.
Either Louis was ignoring him, or didn't hear him. Harry hoped for the latter.
Eventually the teachers got the children to stop, but Harry's heart was broken. His best friend just left him when they were supposed to stick together. Harry barely made it through the rest of the day, and Louis didn't speak one word to him.
Harry was frowning as he got off the bus at his house. His mum greeted him at the doorway.
"What's wrong, baby?" she asked, her smile fading. "Bad day?"
