Okay, so I wished for the sky to brighten and it did. For once in my life, huh?
Scarlett shook her head as she resumed her doodling. Maybe she had a lucky star somewhere?
She didn't think much of it- she didn't do much thinking any more these days. Why bother was her motto ever since her mother had remarried. There was just no purpose in doing anything at all; Annalisa beat her before she'd even reached the starting line.
It was a fact, and she accepted it.
Her heart sank as she looked up and saw Annalisa sashay over, her plaid skirt swishing above her knees as she walked. "Heyyy... Scarlett."
She said the word like it was poison.
"Annalisa," she said, a note of defeat in her voice.
Annalisa laid a hand on her shoulder and put on an obviously fake accent. "Why the drab clothes, darling? I'm sure if you tried harder you'd look less..." She scrunched up her face, as if thinking. "Less like you lived in a dumpster!"
Sophie, her sidekick, burst out laughing. "Too true," she said, grabbing Annalisa's arm and making a big show of dragging her away. "Let's go before the smell gets to us."
Scarlett sighed. "I wish you'd do me a favour and crawl into some hole," she said, to no one in particular- Annalisa and Sophie had sashayed off, giggling.
The bell rang at precisely this moment and she stifled a frustrated scream as she yanked her math book out of her bag. You're useless, Scarlett. You can't beat her and you let her throw you in the dust?
Simply because she had nothing to do, she glanced out the window for the third time that morning. The sun was still shining; the sky was still blue.
But she wished she hadn't when she saw heard Sophie's scream.
